Introduction ESL sections of ENGL 121

1. What to expect Limited vocabulary Organizational problems Impact on paraphrasing and summarizing Organizational problems Interference from native language organizational patterns Sentence level errors in sentence structure, grammar, & mechanics Global versus local errors (triage) Common ESL writing errors

2. Correction THE WRITING PROCESS Importance of the writing process/ drafts Instructor suggestions on draft 1 or 2 global errors, content, logical order, thesis and topic sentences, and unity Writing symbols to indicate errors; student corrections Tutoring

2. Correction FINAL DRAFT “A” papers may still contain local errors ONE GRADING STRATEGY Identify 1-2 recurring errors on each essay. Point students to explanations, resources, and exercises. Have students make corrections. Reduce points on the next essay for this type of mistake.
