Lakeland Wrestling Team Standards PRACTICE HARD! WRESTLE HARD!

SPORTSMASHIP AND CONDUCT Lakeland Wrestling aspires to be a powerful program based on hard work and dedication. Lakeland wrestlers, as individuals and as a team, will serve as role models in the school and the community. Lakeland wrestlers will ALWAYS display good sportsmanship and conduct while striving for the highest levels of physical fitness.

ELIGIBILTY All forms must be completed and returned to the coaching staff by the end of the week of practice, or wrestlers will not be allowed to practice or compete until the forms are received. Forms can be obtained online through the school website. Emergency card Physical or Alternate Year card (if no physical is on file athlete can not practice) Code of Conduct WIAA forms Athletes must have a hydration and body-fat skin-fold test on file to be eligible to compete. The next available test date will be Thursday, November 19. Lakeland Wrestling has a no-cut policy, however misconduct or failure to follow team standards and good sportsmanship may result in dismissal from the team.

TEAM STANDARDS The Varsity team consists of fourteen weight classes and will compete in seven duals and seven multi-team events. The JV team will compete in as many matches as available including tournaments; coaches cannot guarantee matches at every competition, since each school’s JV squad varies in size.

TEAM STANDARDS Team Captain(s) are selected by the coaches and are expected to assist in motivating fellow teammates. Captains are expected to lead by example and be a positive influence on the entire team, in and out of the practice room. WRESTLING REQUIRES A HUGE COMMITMENT. Wrestlers are expected to be available for ALL practices, competition, and team events. (Reasonable circumstances, such as illness, family events, or ACT taking, are of course exceptions, however outside commitments such as other sports are not acceptable.) Wrestlers commit to a particular weight class. However the coaching staff does not encourage or support excessive weight loss. Wrestlers failing to make their weight class impact the entire team, and may not be permitted to compete at a higher weight for that competition. Wrestling is physically demanding, and proper training develops skills and prevents injury. Wrestlers must give 100%, or risk injury. Wrestlers should set goals throughout the season and be prepared to work hard to achieve them.

TEAM STANDARDS Lakeland Wrestlers will support their teammates and must stay until the conclusion of competition events. If a wrestler must leave an event early due to extenuating circumstances, coaches must know in advance. Hazing of fellow teammates will not be tolerated. The use of cigarettes, alcohol, or drugs is prohibited, on or off campus. Demonstrate a winning attitude – BE CHAMPIONS IN ALL YOU DO!

ATTENDANCE School attendance (all classes) is required to be eligible for practice and competition. Only the Athletic Director, or designated school administrator may approve appointments during the school day, and must be notified one day in advance. IT IS A WRESTLER’S RESPONSIBILITY TO NOTIFY THE COACHES IN ADVANCE OF ANY IMPENDING ABSENCES. DO NOT RELY ON TEAM MEMBERS TO RELAY THIS INFORMATION.

ATTENDANCE Wrestlers missing practice the day before competition for anything other than an absence from school, a medical appointment, or a family emergency, will not participate. Wrestlers, who have medical appointments, must give the coaches a note signed by a parent before that day’s practice. Wrestlers are allowed FIVE absences (excused or unexcused). Any more will result in dismissal from the team. All wrestlers MUST stay through the conclusion of home matches to clean up the gym and store the mats.

PRACTICE School ends at 3:30. Practice will begin promptly at 4:00. All training needs should be taken care of by this time. BE THERE, BE ON TIME, and WORK HARD! Pay attention and follow the coaches’ instructions; drill only the holds supposed to be worked on. DO NOT LEAVE THE WRESTLING ROOM WITHOUT COACHES PERMISSION! Schoolwork is a priority, but homework is not an excuse for missing practice. Wrestlers are expected to manage their time so that schoolwork and practice do not interfere with each other. If time is needed for class work it must be discussed with the coaching staff prior to missing practice or the absence will be unexcused. Wrestlers missing practice (unexcused) will not be permitted to wrestle off for a new weight class and will not be allowed compete in the next event.

LETTER CRITERIA Varsity letters will be earned based on participation and achievement in wrestling. Criteria that will be used to determine will include: 4 years in wrestling completion of at least 15 varsity matches (not including forfeits) 25 or more points earned in the following ways: varsity match = 1 point/loss 2 points/ win 3 points/ Maj. Dec. 4 points/ TF 5 points/pin tournament placing 1st = 4 pts 2nd = 3 pts 3rd = 2 pts 4th = 1pt Wrestlers must complete the entire season.

LETTER CRITERIA Attendance and effort at practices and competitions will influence letter awards. Coaches make final decisions on awarding all letter awards.

EQUIPMENT LUHS will provide competition singlets, headgear, and warm-ups. Wrestlers will be issued a singlet and warm-ups before each competition and will turn it in after competing. Headgear and equipment bags must be returned at the end of the season. Wrestlers are responsible for any equipment issued that is lost, damaged, or stolen. Wrestlers should have appropriate practice clothes and shoes. Wrestling shoes for competition and practice. Running shoes - Conditioning is an everyday event and it is not safe, or healthy to run on hard surfaces with wrestling shoes. It is not necessary to purchase special running shoes, but shoes used for gym class should be available for practice. Shorts and T-shirts for practice, and occasionally we will run outside, so wrestlers should have warmer clothes for outside runs.

TRANSPORTATION All wrestlers must ride school provided transportation to and from events. Athletes will only be released to their parent(s) or guardian(s) with a written note.
