Review Idioms from last year An ASL pro, proficient in ASL I have been taking ASL classes for the past 7 years. Today, I am an ASL pro! As easy as pie, piece of cake Roller skating was a piece of cake for me when I was a little girl, but forget about me doing it today! At a loss for words, speechless The teacher told me off and thus I was at a loss for words. Nonetheless, I learned something! Awesome, remarkable, “Big” wow! The Deaf theater group is really awesome at showing many facial expressions. It’s a big wow! Back up It is important to back up the computer every week. Barely, hardly, scarcely, hard to come by I only had five dollars left and was barely able to shop! Better than nothing The refrigerator only had an apple left. I felt it was better than nothing and ate it.

Conversations Practice Situation 1: Approach your partner and suggest an activity in the near future. (possible activities: movie, shopping, playing cards, playing basketball, cooking class.) Your partner should ask you if s/he can bring along one or two family members (i.e. brothers, sisters, parents, grandparents, children, spouse.) Settle on a date to for activity. Situation 2: You and your friend agreed to meet at a restaurant at 11:30 for brunch. It is now 12:15. Approach your friend, apologize and explain your lateness. (possible reasons: you overslept, couldn’t find parking, couldn’t find the restaurant, traffic, medical or dental appointment.) I will give you a number, that is situation you are going to start with someone. You should start a situation but also another person should start one with you. You should have two different conversations before sitting down.

Grammar Notes To form a negative statement, use this sign "NOT" and make sure to maintain a negative headshake throughout the statement. To answer no to a yes/no question use the sign "NO". This should be followed either by a negative statement as described above, or a statement that gives the correct information.  For example, (in English), to answer the question "are you married?" Either use a negative statement "no, I'm not married" or correct the information "no, I'm divorced".   Another sign used for certain kind of negative statements "none".  In English you can use the word "no" to negate different kinds of statements.  You can say, "I have no sisters,"  or "there is no ice cream left" or "there is no such thing".  In ASL, however, to say you don't have something, or there is none, or something doesn't exist, use the sign to form a negative statement.  "none"  

Time Concepts To indicate tense (past, present, future) in ASL, use a time sign at the beginning of the sentence. Once the tense has been established, everything that follows is understood to be in that time frame until a new time is specified. To understand time signs, it may be helpful to imagine a time line as you sign. Everything referring to the future moves forward; everything referring to the past moves back; everything referring to the present is signed just in front of the body. Combining these with other signs you can say “last month” past month. “2 weeks ago” 2 weeks past.

Basic Shapes Describe the shapes exactly as you see them in the pictures to the right.

Symmetrical Objects: Add Attachments Describe each basic shape in the left column, then change the description 6 times for each by adding various attachments from the right column.

Asymmetrical combinations 1 2 3 4 5 Asymmetrical combinations A B C D E F Sign various base shapes with attachments. Can your partner find the shape you sign? Remember, hold your weak hand in the base shape as a reference point. You can sign either left or right handed, depending on where the attachment is.

Activity With Partner You are going to sign 5 different Shapes, and they will draw them on their paper. Then switch, and the other person sign shapes to their partner.
