A look into the Dutch systems of healthcare and retirement. “As good as it gets” A look into the Dutch systems of healthcare and retirement.

Dutch Retirement Average life expectancy= 78.6 Full, old-age pension at 65 for. Amount per month: $1,000 for singles, $1,400 for couples. (married or not)

Dutch Healthcare All citizens of the Netherlands have government insurance. Prescription drugs are available for all citizens. Little to no copay. Covers at home care and nursing home stays. (Long term AND short term!)

How? Lower costs in general. Drugs, hospitals and physician service costs are 30- 50% higher in the United States pre-insurance than in the Netherlands. Government regulates almost all healthcare expenses.

How continued... Almost half of dutch taxes go to the Universal Pension Fund. 52% taken out for taxes on salaries averaging $60,000 yearly or higher. (dropping to less than 30,000 yearly hitting just above poverty level.)

Dutch Attitude Social Solidarity. “The European attitude is, we’re all in this together.” General belief= “people that have worked their entire lives should be protected from poverty.”

Pros Definite retirement at 65 opens up Jobs and increases employment rate for young adults. Takes care of the elderly, whether it be through retirement pension or healthcare coverage. Little to no copay.

Cons Necessity vs. Non-necessity. Wait for care, even when urgent. HUGE chunk of Salary goes to taxes.

Interesting Dutch Facts Government allows coverage for sex sex change surgery. Marijuana is a legal prescription drug, free with insurance. In the U.S. 4.8 million continue working after 65, in the Netherlands, 0 continue working. Early retirement is common. 70% of citizens say they’re satisfied with the system.
