Hebrews 9:11-14 (ESV) 11 But when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things that have come, then through the greater and more perfect tent (not made with hands, that is, not of this creation) 12 he entered once for all into the holy places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves but by means of his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption.

Hebrews 9:11-14 (ESV) 13 For if the blood of goats and bulls, and the sprinkling of defiled persons with the ashes of a heifer, sanctify for the purification of the flesh, 14 how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God.

Hebrews 10:5-7,10 (ESV) 5 Consequently, when Christ came into the world, he said, “Sacrifices and offerings you have not desired, but a body have you prepared for me; 6 in burnt offerings and sin offerings you have taken no pleasure.

Hebrews 10:5-7,10 (ESV) 7 Then I said, ‘Behold, I have come to do your will, O God,     as it is written of me in the scroll of the book.’” 10 And by that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

Introduction THE SACRIFICIAL SYSTEM OF THE OLD TESTAMENT WAS A MEANS OF GRACE BY WHICH THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN GOD AND HUMANITY BEGINS TO BE RESTORED.

Introduction ULTIMATELY, THE SACRIFICIAL SYSTEM WAS INADEQUATE, WHICH IS WHY JESUS CAME TO EARTH.

Main Idea Christ offered His life for us that we may live and dedicate our lives to God.

OUTLINE I. Purpose of Sacrificial System in Old Testament II. Offerings Given in the Old Testament III. Giving Our lives as Offerings to God

I. Purpose of Sacrificial System in Old Testament The OT offerings and sacrifices foreshadowed the sacrifices that would be made by Christ and His church (Hebrews ch 8)

I. Purpose of Sacrificial System in Old Testament The OT offerings and sacrifices foreshadowed the sacrifices that would be made by Christ and His church (Hebrews ch 8)

I. Purpose of Sacrificial System in Old Testament It was a response to the holiness of God. It was a response to the blessings God had provided to Israel. It was in response to man‘s guilt, and God‘s willingness to forgive.

I. Purpose of Sacrificial System in Old Testament It was man‘s desire to express his gratitude to God for his blessings. Israel‘s sacrificial system was an expression of covenant with God. In Israel, sacrifices were never to become a substitute for righteous living. An unrighteous life meant an unrighteous sacrifice.

Application How do we misapply the sacrificial system in trying to manipulate or appease God rather than build a relationship that has a loving response to God’s love to us?

II. Offerings Given in the Old Testament

The Five Offerings & Sacrifices (from Leviticus) Commitment to God 1. Burnt Offering 2. Meal Offering Communion with God 3. Peace Offering Cleansing by God 4. Sin Offering 5. Trespass / Guilt Offering

III. Giving Our lives as Offerings to God Hebrews 13:15-16 15 Through him then let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name.16 Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.

III. Giving Our lives as Offerings to God Hebrews 13:20-21 20 Now may the God of peace who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant, 21 equip you with everything good that you may do his will, working in us that which is pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen.
