SPARC Grants Did they make a difference on campus? Armstrong’s Strategic Planning and Resource Council (SPARC II) provides funding of up to $5,000 to initiatives that support the mission, vision, values, and goals of the Strategic Plan. Did they make a difference on campus? Did they support our strategic goals? Were they sustainable?

SPARC GRANTS 2011-2012 Speaker’s Bureau SERVES Safe Space Parent & Family Program Residential Interest Group Initiative Teens and Literacy

Speaker’s Bureau Developing a “Speakers Bureau,” which provides opportunities for alumni and members of the local and global communities to interact with students, faculty, and staff though various curricular and co- curricular speaking venues Program ran 2011-2013 No longer active – lack of funding

S.E.R.V.E.S Support Encouragement and Resources Vital for Educational Success Implementing a comprehensive advisement program for students in the College of Education.

Safe Space Safe Space is a three-hour workshop to raise awareness and knowledge of LGBTQ issues and suggest ways to serve as an ally to LGBTQ individuals. Following the workshop, participants receive a Safe Space decal to display in their workspace, indicating to the campus community that they are knowledgeable and supportive allies.

Teens and Literacy Providing opportunities for Armstrong students to mentor elementary school students in reading and learning. Now the Teens for Literacy program in the College of Education Funded through Dollar General Literacy & Savannah Community Foundation

SPARC GRANTS 2012-2013 Digging Savannah Undergraduate Research Support Minority Student Achievement in Biology, Chemistry & Psychology Joining Forces with Military Families Non-Traditional Student Transition Program

Digging Savannah: Saving Savannah’s Archeological Sites Enhancing knowledge of local archaeology. Student participants developed iPhone and Android applications for a walking tour of archeology in Savannah. Armstrong hosted lectures on local archeology and the Georgia Archaeology Archaeobus. No longer active, lack of funds

Undergraduate Research Grants Small grants awarded to undergraduate students in the College of Liberal Arts or the  College of Science and Technology for the purpose of undertaking a research project.  All awardees will be required to present their research results at the Armstrong Student  Scholars Symposium. Now funded through Academic Affairs and Student Affairs

Transforming Student Learning in Chemistry and Physics with Supplemental Instructors Advanced Chemistry and Physics students are hired as Supplemental Instructors (SIs) for  introductory course in these two disciplines Following success of grant, expanded to College of S&T wide program  Continues with CCG Funds

Joining Forces with Military Families Candidates from the Department of Secondary, Adult and Physical Education connect with families  from the local military community. Military Family Day to help familiarize them with the college setting. Funded one additional year by the College of Education Low attendance

Non-Traditional Student Transition Program Created a student worker position to work with our non- traditional, veteran applicants  to assist them as they navigate the transition to Armstrong (admissions, registration and financial aid process) At end of grant, duties taken over by VA student workers in the new Military Resource Center

Interprofessional Collaboration

Green Zone The Green Zone Program is a campus-wide initiative providing locations recognized by Veterans as a safe place to aid in their transition from military to university and civilian life. Now Funded by the Aurora Foundation

Peer Financial Counseling A series of lesson were developed that explore the critical issues of budgeting, savings, investing, credit use, credit reports, identity theft, and student loans. Student speakers present dynamic seminars to classes, clubs, residence halls and other student organizations on campus. Continues with student volunteers

Building Better Teachers Provided support services to students preparing for the State Licensure requirements Used grant to produce videos & resources that are currently in use

Support Student Participation in Study Abroad Programs Provided financial assistance to students who are interested in, but who cannot afford study abroad program at Armstrong.

SPARC GRANTS 2014-2015 Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention

Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Training based on the theory of bystander intervention to teach Armstrong students to be active participants in ensuring the well- being of their peers by de-escalating potentially violent situations Now incorporated in the Weekend of Welcome Funded by Student Affairs
