Flying Scholarship 2015 Administration

Eligibility - Glider Glider: Must be minimum 16 by September 1st Able to hold a CAT 3 Transport Canada medical Completed Level 3 and Grade 9 by June 30th Minimum 50% on Entrance Exam Height: 5’1”-6’3” Weight: 90lbs-200lbs

Eligibility - Power Power: Must be minimum 17 by September 1st Able to hold a CAT 3 Transport Canada medical Completed Level 4 and Grade 10 by June 30th Minimum 50% on Entrance Exam Weight: No more than 245lbs

Flying Schol Course Requirements Must sell minimum of 2 Lottery Ticket BOOKS (Must be on minimum of 1 cadet team) Maintain high level of dress, deportment and level training throughout the year Lottery Ticket books: Must take 2 to begin with; I will be checking with the sponsoring committee and advising them in advance about the requirement. If you do not sell them by the middle of November, you will be disqualified from taking the test. Teams: Drill Team, Flag Party, Band, Yearbook, Orienteering Team/geocaching, Effective Speaking, Range Team Dress and Deportment: Using the dress and deportment marks from your Flight marking sheets

Daily Schedule Tuesdays from 1830-2130 (3 hour classes) 1830-1915 Quiz 1915-2015 Lecture 2015-2030 Break (if able) 2030-2130 Lecture Assignments due as you are entering the class or they are considered late Break may or may not be given depending on length of lecture to be completed and deportment of the class Classes without a quiz will be: 1830-2015 Lecture 2015-2030 Break 2030-2130 Lecture Test days will be three hours for the whole exam. Cadets may leave when they are finished writing.

Attendance Marks 1 point for every flying schol class attended 1 point for every tagging shift attended 1 point for every poppy sale shift attended 0.5 point for late arrivals 0 points for absents % point from Fortress for mandatory events Every class of Flying Schol is mandatory 3 Tagging shifts are mandatory-points for extra shifts attended Attendance Mark: Years of Service 5% Summer Training 5% Rank 5% Current Grade 5% Squadron Attendance 40% Flying Scholarship Attendance 40%

Attendance Continued… If going to be absent, bring note signed by parent or guardian with reason to be excused Excused days will not count against mark Late for flying schol classes: wait until next break (after quiz or during scheduled break) Could end up with more than full 10% if extra tagging shifts and poppy sales are done

Assignments Assignments will be put on the website every week and are due at the beginning of the following class If unable to hand in, can be given to another cadet or emailed to flying@142sqn.ca Late assignments will be accepted no more than 5 days after due date and will have 10% penalty per day (up to 50%) Any assignments handed in after class has started are subject to the 10% deduction

Exam Candidates Based on Annual numbers, therefore: 2 spots for Glider 2 spots for Power Names chosen by approximately November 25th (pretty early!!!) Most of the course will be completed at this time, but not all of it

To make this tough decision: First 4-5 assignments First 2-3 quizzes Term Test 1 Attendance up to approximately November 24th Narrative submission Lottery ticket sales Optional training participation Past the November deadline: Candidates chosen will spend the rest of the course battling for the order in which they will be recommended for their respective course! Assignments: Air Law Theory of Flight 1, 2 Met 1 Met 2 Met 3 Nav (Radio/airmanship) Quizzes: Theory of Flight Met (Nav)

Spreadsheet Examples Attendance excel sheet: New tracking sheet -Participation now counts for 35% of mark; includes years of service, summer training, squadron attendance and rank -Tagging shifts: 1 point Friday, 2 points Saturday and 2 points Sunday (3 shifts are mandatory); extra points for extra shifts, poppy sales and extra remembrance day parades -Total: Gibson earned 18 points out of 15 points -Engines class not counted towards total mark for Glider applicants, only for tracking purposes Marking excel sheet: -Assignment/quiz/test and (mark)+bonus -Mark on assignment/quiz/test -Total for assignment/quiz/test -Total mark for each cadet-turns red, yellow or green depending on comparison to all other applicants for each course -Indicated next to it is the percentage cadet is getting in the class overall -Placement for entrance exam candidacy Red line indicates approximately where marks will be calculated for entrance exam candidates

Interviews Mock interviews will be held in January for all National Course applicants Full uniform Full mock marking with feedback Conducted by Squadron Officers, civilian volunteers and SSC members in same fashion that real interviews will be completed Will be at least two sets of mock interviews to ensure that cadets receive feedback for their original interview
