Mater Academy Elementary Welcome to Open House! October 4, 2017 Mater Academy Elementary Ms. S. Perez- Room #3 Second Grade 2017-2018

Our Schedule! Everyday I will provide your child with instruction in Reading, Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies. Lunch : 11:45a.m.-12:15p.m. (* For birthday celebrations please let me know 48 hours in advance. Must be done in the cafeteria.*) P.E.: Monday- Friday @ 2:05a.m.- 2:45p.m Spanish: Weds.-Friday. @ 8:15a.m. Art: Wednesday 10:15a.m.- 11:15a.m. Music: Tuesday 12:45a.m.- 1:45p.m. *Each subject area requires their own supplies if requested by teacher. *

Behavior Management Each day the students begin on ready to learn. They move up or down the chart according to their behavior. - Anchors Away will require a note home (sad gram) describing their misconduct. - Captain’s of Good Behavior will also require a note home (happy gram) describing good behavior, a sticker, and a treat! -Each day I will ask the students to write in their agenda where they ended up on the chart and ask that you initial it to maintain communication of their daily behavior.

Rewards & Consequences

Home Learning - Blue Folder to keep daily homework - Please check homework folder daily *Agenda and I-Ready Log should be signed by a parent every day after checking child’s work* -Homework must be done DAILY in its entirety or your child will not receive credit. -Your child will write their homework DAILY in their agendas.

Communication Folder I have created communication folders for important papers to be sent home. – This folder is the red folder from the first day of school. It will contain any paperwork that needs to be signed and returned or any notices of important reminders that need to be given to you. Please check this folder DAILY. The separation of the documents and the students homework will allow for less confusion.

READ, READ, READ !!! Reading is essential for success! Read to your child! Read with your child! Help develop a love for reading in your child. Have your child read 15-20 minutes daily. Utilize Reading Plus!

S.T.E.M. What is STEM?  Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. Students solving real-world, open-ended problems. What is STEM Designation?  STEM Designation is an initiative in Miami-Dade County Public Schools to promote STEM education and integration among its disciplines. Why are we doing this?  -- Prepare today’s learners for tomorrow’s careers. What will this look like at Mater? Students will be participating in STEM labs in the classrooms. Students will have opportunities to participate in different STEM Competitions (such as the District Science Fair).

Growth Mindset

Scholastic Reading Club This year I will highly encourage reading by joining the Scholastic book club and allowing for our class to order new books monthly. The magazine will go home once a month with our class code to order with and a due date. Orders will be accepted in class with a completed order form and CASH only. Classroom library donations will be accepted for Volunteer Hours

Tardiness & Attendance School starts at 8:15 a.m. If students are not in the classroom by the time the announcements start, please check in at the school office before coming to class. Your child will receive a referral for any of the following: 10 Tardies (TARDIES ARE NOT EXCUSED) 3 Unexcused Absences 10 Excused Absences 5 Unexcused Early dismissals. It is VERY important that your child comes to school everyday. If they cannot attend or must leave early, send a note when your child returns to school. Notes submitted more than 3 days after your child’s return to school will not be accepted.

Morning & Dismissal Morning Procedure Student greets teacher and other students in class Copy new homework from board Turn in homework in folder Work on Morning Work until announcements begin Dismissal Procedure Bus will be dismissed at 2:30 Class will clean their area and pack up belongings quietly At 2:43 class will line up and will walk to the front of the school together No one is to return to class after dismissal

Uniform Policy Complete uniform is to be worn EVERY day: Boys- khaki pants, white / hunter green / yellow school shirt, black or brown shoes or sneakers, belt, and shirt tucked in. Girls- khaki pants or khaki skort, white / hunter green/ yellow school shirt, black or brown shoes or sneakers, and shirt tucked in. Sweaters must be solid hunter green Shirts must be tucked in at all times.

Uniform Continued… On cold days: A solid white long sleeve shirt may be worn under the school shirt or the school rugby long-sleeved uniform shirt. Girls may wear khaki pants or white colored tights with the skorts. On Fridays: Students may wear BLUE jeans with the school polo, or school t-shirt for $1.00. (no sandals, jean shorts or capris are allowed.) Please make sure to send student with $1.00 if they decide to participate in jeans Day. Out of uniform warnings will be given if No dollar more than twice.

Volunteer Hours -30 Volunteer Hours per Student -30 Volunteer hours per family, if there is 1 or more siblings in this school. (Hours should be divided equally amongst each child’s teacher.) (*Always provide a receipt for hours to be given*) -Field Trips - Wish List ( Take a Helping Hand!) -School Functions -Materials for Academic Learning Office Supplies Classroom donation for parties or events Gift Cards to WalMart/ Staples/ Office Depot Every $1= 1 Volunteer Hour (accompany receipts with child’s name, hours cannot be given with out a receipt.)

Technology Reflex Math: At least 3x per week for a technology grade. ( 15-20 min sessions=45 or more PER WEEK) I-Ready: Reading and Mathematics (log in homework packet) Reading Plus (NEW) ( ID Cards for logging in are in their AGENDA) Any issues with technology at home must be addressed before assignments are due to be graded. Time can be given early in the morning to make up.

Important Dates! The S.A.T. is a State Assessment given each year from Kindergarten to Second grade. This test measures Reading Comprehension and Mathematics skills. Weeks of 4/4/18- 4/10/18 Reading Test: 4/4/18 Math Test: 4/5/18 Makeups: 4/6/18-4/10/18

Parent-Teacher Conferences I am available to meet with you in the mornings on Wednesday-Friday at 8:30 a.m. while the students are in Spanish or during any other special throughout the week. Please understand that these times must be adhered to due to the instructional time with the students. If you prefer another time please email me to accommodate you and plan ahead.
