King lear Character question

The question: “Lear’s transformation from an arrogant, egotistical monarch to an isolated old man plunging into insanity evokes deep sympathy in the audience.” Discuss this statement supporting all points with reference to the text. 50 marks

Remember: You are free to agree and/or disagree with this statement – as long as you can support your ideas! You must focus only on the character of Lear. You may make reference to other characters to support Lear’s changing personality, but do not get side-tracked and stray off the point. Answer should have a clear intro, supporting paragraphs, and conclusion.

Brainstorm: BRAINSTORM NOW!!! Think about the question for 2 minutes. Then discuss your ideas with the person beside you. Finally, share with the class. Everyone should be taking notes!!! The easiest way to deal with this question is to move through the text and chart the changes in Lear’s character as they occur. REMEMBER: We learn about a character in what they say, what they do (their actions/behaviour), and what others say about them. BRAINSTORM NOW!!!

Writing the essay: First clearly outline in your intro if you agree/disagree with the statement. Then outline briefly the points you will make. Each point requires its own paragraph. Make sure to use relevant quotes to support every point, one quote per paragraph is not enough! Build quotes into your sentences rather than having them stand alone. It is not enough to make your point and provide a quotation, you must discuss how this relates to your interpretation of the statement. Finally: summarise your main points in your conclusion. Do not introduce new information. You are finished!

The small print…. This essay should be approximately 4 pages long. This essay is due on MONDAY 24th October. No extensions will be given! You have plenty of information in your own book and the handouts you have been given to answer this question. You will need to make a plan or else your answer will lack fluency and coherence. Please remember PCLM when writing your essay. Have a nice weekend 
