Abteilung für Pflanzenschutz MOLECULAR PHYTOPATHOLOGY MASTERTHESIS MOLECULAR PHYTOPATHOLOGY Many nematodes are parasites of a variety of crop plants. Root gall nematodes and cyst nematodes have a biotrophic life style and induce specific feeding sites in the roots of their host plants which are their sole source of nutrients throughout their life. We have performed a transcriptome analysis of syncytia induced in Arabidopsis roots by the beet cyst nematode Heterodera schachtii . This identified a large number of genes that are downregulated in syncytia. Arabidopsis plants overexpressing several of these and other genes are available and could be tested for resistance against cyst nematodes. Szakasits et al. (2009) Plant Journal 57; 771-784 Topic: Characterise the resistance of Arabidopsis plants that overexpress different resistance-related genes Characterize these plants with real-time RT-PCR Our lab is located at the UFT in Tulln. Travelling expenses can be reimbursed. Contact: Holger Bohlmann DNW, Div. of Plant Protection UFT, Tulln Tel. 47654 3360 email holger.bohlmann@boku.ac.at Arabidopsis thaliana
