Course background To provide students with a thorough introduction to the theory behind current and upcoming technological advances in cellular and molecular biology, experimental medicine, molecular and clinical imaging and clinical investigation paradigms To enable students to experience some of the most technologically advanced approaches currently being applied in experimental sciences through two individual research projects, based in Division of Investigative Science, the Wellcome Trust McMichael Centre, and/or the GSK Clinical Imaging Centre. To enable clinical graduates to meet the Joint Committee on Higher Medical Training (JCHMT) recommendations for all trainees to be encouraged to undertake a period of full time research and have a good knowledge of research methodology. To facilitate the interactions between clinical and non-clinical scientists in an actual Academic Health Science Centre environment, enabling the cross-fertilisation of ideas and approaches bringing about greater understanding and future productive collaboration between scientists with differing backgrounds.

Course structure A research project spanning the duration of the two-year programme. Usually with preclinical and clinical components. Opportunities to network with clinical academics and other trainees, PhD students Projects assigned on a collaborative basis matched to the students’ individual interests. 10,000 word thesis produced by end of year 2.
