Graphing in Science Class
Making Graphs from Data. Bar, Line, or Pie? / One of the first things one needs to do when graphing is decide whether to make a bar graph or a line graph.
Graphs Graphs are used to display data. They visually represent relationships between data. All graphs should have a title that identifies the variables.
Graphing Why? Help us communicate information : Visual What is it telling your? Basic Types Line Bar Pie.
Tables and Graphing. Displaying Data Sometimes it is easier to read data in a visual format. This can come in the form of tables, graphs, charts, etc.
Graphing Data in Science Looking for a pattern. Why use a graph? Easier to analyze data Visualize patterns in the data Looks for trends.
Graphing Exercise. In this exercise you are going to make as many dots as you can on your whiteboard in a chosen amount of time. You will then graph your.
Graphing Graphing used to Display the Data that scientists collected during a controlled experiment.
Notes Graphs. Types of graphs A graph is just a picture of an amount of something. Like size of buildings since 1900.
Graphing in Science. Why do we graph? Visual representation of data “Short hand” for presenting large amounts of information at once Easier to visualize.
Graphing Data. Graphs All graphs must have title and labeled axis Labels let you know what information is shown.
Graphing Basics. Why do we graph? Visual representation of data “Short hand” for presenting large amounts of information at once Easier to visualize trends.
Graphing If a picture is worth a thousand words, a graph is worth a thousand pictures.
Graphing. Line Graphs  Shows a relationship where the dependent variable changes due to a change in the independent variable  Can have more than one.
What are we learning today?  Objective: Identify and interpret the 4 types of graphs and how they are used to show results.  Essential Question: How.

Today’s Objectives SWBAT use bar graphs, pie charts, and line graphs to represent data!

Data Data are information in the form of measurements or observations. Qualitative: observations (qualities) Quantitative: measurements (quantitites)

Data Table Data tables are used to display our data. In a data table, the independent variable is on the left and the dependent variable is on the right. You need to make sure that you include units!

Studying vs. Assessment Score Independent Dependent Variable Variable An Example Studying vs. Assessment Score Independent Dependent Variable Variable Units!!

Table Data  Line graph

Graphing- Why is it important? Key skill used in math, science, business, social studies, reading Useful for almost all jobs that pay well (medicine, law, business) Learn it now so you can be exceptional!

Have you ever heard the saying… “A picture is worth a thousand words!”

There are 4 Main Types of Graphs 1) Bar graphs 2) Line graphs 3) Pie charts 4) Scatterplots

Bar Graph Usually a bar graph is used to compare different groups Useful for comparing data of several groups Example: Popular Degrees to Get in College

Pie Chart or Circle Graph Pie charts are used to show percentages of a whole at a set point in time Show part: whole relationships The “pie” is divided into different “pieces” of different sizes The size of each piece represents a fraction or a percentage of the whole (100%)

Example: Favorite Musicians of 8th Graders

Line Graphs A line graph is usually used to show how something changes over a short period of time They have two different axes that each show a value for a variable Within a line, graph, a point is plotted at each place where the values of two variables intersect A line is used to connect all points Line graphs are best used to show trends in data more clearly than tables

Line Graph vs. Bar Graph

Creating a Graph Every graph must have: Title Labeled Axes Numbered Axes Units

Titling Graphs Must communicate the dependent and independent variables Can be presented in the form “Y versus X” Some graphs need more descriptive titles than others Score vs. Score Final Score vs. Diagnostic Score Relationship between Final Score and Diagnostic Score for 8th Grade Science Brent Maddin * bmaddin@gmail.com

Labeling the X and Y Axes Independent (manipulated) variable is written along the horizontal axis (X axis) Dependent (responding) variable is written along the vertical axis (Y axis) Units on any variables should be included in parentheses (kg) Brent Maddin * bmaddin@gmail.com

Numbering Axes: Shorten these steps for yourself… STEP 1: Find the range for the variable Range = Largest Value - Smallest Value STEP 2: Divide the range by the number of intervals you have/want. Round up to get a number that is easy to count by. STEP 3: Mark off intervals on the axis, counting by the rounded number. The interval must be the same amount each time Brent Maddin * bmaddin@gmail.com

Creating a Graph As the pH of solution changes, The activity of the enzyme in the solution is affected. The enzyme activity at different pHs is shown in the table.
