The Fourth Cultural Season for The Department of Materials Engineering الموسم الثقافي الرابع لقسم هندسة المواد University Of Technology Department of Materials Engineering Polymer Engineering Branch By: Ahmed Hashim Aliwi Supervised By: Asst.Prof.Dr. Akram R. Jabur الجامعـــــة التكنولوجيـــــة قســــم هندســـة المـــواد فـــرع هندســـة الپوليمرات اعداد:أحمد هاشم عليوي اشراف:ا.م.د أكرم رحيم جبر Additives affects on electrical conductivity used for conductive polymer fabrication Abstract : As it is known that polymers is insulating material for electricity due to the large energy gap and absence of enough free electrons to enhance the electrical conductivity, so that the project is include adding salts that activate the electrons to transfer from valence band to conductive band so conduct electricity and also reduce the energy gap . The project use poly vinyl alcohol (PVA) as the polymeric material that are used for enhance it's conductivity by adding some types of salts (NaCl, CaCl2, CuCl2, MgCl2) in different concentration and study the effect of these salts that added to polymer . Experiment Preparation of a polymer solution for poly vinyl alcohol (PVA) 7% with water solution . Preparation of salt solution for different salts (NaCl, CaCl2, CuCl2 , MgCl2) 10% with water solution . Adding salt solution to polymer solution in different ratio (0:100 ,5:95 ,10:90 ,15:85 ,20:80 ,25:75 ,30:70) and study the effect of these salts on the electrical conductivity for polymer . Result After mixing salt solution to polymer solution . Observed that increasing salt concentration (0% ,0.5% ,1% ,1.5% ,2% ,2.5% ,3% ) , increase the electrical conductivity of the polymeric solution . Table : The result of the electrical conductivity test for adding different salt solution to PVA (7%) water solution at room temperature Figure : The relationship between salt concentration for different additives and PVA (7%) water solution electrical conductivity Electrical conductivity for different additives(mS/cm) Concentration MgCl2 CuCl2 CaCl2 NaCl2 % 1.047 4.52 5.09 5.55 8.22 0.5 8.05 9.35 9.96 14.98 1 11.66 13.53 15.28 21.5 1.5 15.2 17.6 20.8 27.9 2 18.47 21 25.2 34.6 2.5 21.7 24.1 29.7 41.2 3 Figures illustrated the relationship between CuCl2 additives concentration with electrical conductivity , surface tension & viscosity of PVA (7%) water solution From this work electrical conductive polymeric nano-fiber of poly vinyl alcohol fabricated by electrospinning technique Pure PVA (7 %) Thin film SEM image for Pure PVA (7 %) Electro-spinning تم تصميم هذا العمل خصيصاً للموسم الثقافي الرابع لقسم هندسة المواد / الجامعة التكنولوجية فكرة وتصميم: أ.م. ماجد حميد عبد المجيد, الباحث حيدر باسل علي
