What is it ? Killaspugbrone is an early Christian church on the west coast of Sligo in the modern village of Strandhill. It’s one of the oldest churches in Sligo. Bishop Bron Mac Icni was the founder of Killaspugbrone. The present building dates to the 12th century. The original church was built in the 5th century. It was a major pilgrimage site. The church was a victim of a Viking attack. Maybe the the same one that assaulted Inishmurray. It is the oldest church in the Barony of Carbory which goes from Sligo as far as Mullaghmore.

Where is it? Killaspugbrone is located in Strandhill a coastal village and town land in Co.Sligo. It is situated at the foot of Knocknarae on the west. Killaspugbrone is built on a beach which looks directly at Coney Island. It also has a graveyard beside it.

How it got it’s name? Killaspugbrone means “Church of Bishop Bron” St.Patrick was the founder of Killaspugbrone, but then he gave it to his disciple Bishop Bron. Kill means church. Aspug meaning bishop and Brone for Bishop Bron.

Who St.patrick is St.Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland. He was the founder of Killaspugbrone and then gave it to his disciple Bishop Bron. Legend tells us that his tooth fell out on the spot where the church was built. His tooth is now held in The National museum of Ireland.

Directions Start at Sligo Airport , enter the gate on the left 100 metres before the car park. The path will take you past the runway . Then take a right turn which will bring you to the church. If you want to know facts about it there is a notice board there. siteboardbthere.
