How to access and read IEPs Initially, I tried to access IEPs on my own and was having a pretty hard time I went to LST and BASES and they were able to help me out and show me how to access them as well as read them Highlights students strengths and weaknesses Lists students Goals, Objectives, and Strategies

What is Autism? Every person with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is unique Symptoms can range from being quite mild to quite severe Severe autism may have serious cognitive disability, sensory problems, and symptoms of extremely repetitive behaviour Mild conditions may seem more like they have personality difference making it challenge to form relationships

What is Autism? The most common symptoms of individuals with autism include problems with communication and interactions with others, as well as repetitive interests and activities

What is Autism? Common Strengths: non-verbal reasoning skills, reading skills, perceptual motor skills, drawing, computer interest and skills. Strong memory, music skills Common Weaknesses: Struggle building relationships, dependence on routine, deficits in communication, behaviour problems, abnormal responses to sensory stimulation variability of intellectual functioning

Academic Accommodations Throughout the semester this far I have been able to accommodate the student in a number of ways academically. Increasing the size of the notes/worksheets so she has more room to write Providing the EA with answer keys so she is able to send them home to the parents

Related to the IEP This particular student happens to be very strong academically Her IEP is centered around improving her social skills and her ability to self-regulate I wanted to start to accommodate her more socially

What I have tried Group work is a big part of my class and I encouraged this students to work with others I could have done a better job of working with her specifically as I did not give her any further instruction than what I had given to the rest of the class I address proper communication skills and proper group work etiquette but I should have spent more time on it with this student

What I would like to try I have talked to the student to try and get a better idea of what she is interested in but I need to do this again, try to incorporate her interests into the class if I can When I am having students take part in group work I can post specific rules that are visible and understandable for all students with regards to positive social interactions

What I would like to try I want to use students who have strong communication and social skills as examples more often. Try to use a fish bowl activity so that this student can get a good example of what strong social behaviour looks like

What I would like to try Preparing a script for this student may also be beneficial. Give the student a script or ideas they can use when they are in specific social situations I am going to try reinforcing positive behaviour more often as well. I do this now but I would like to use positive reinforcement more with this student
