Heb. 8:1-2 Now this is the main point of the things we are saying: We have such a High Priest, who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens, a Minister of the sanctuary and of the true tabernacle which the Lord erected, and not man.

Hebrews 8:1-2 – A Perfect Priest We have a perfect representative at the right hand of God!

Hebrews 8:1-2 – A Perfect Priest We have direct access to God through His Son!

Heb. 8:3-4 For every high priest is appointed to offer both gifts and sacrifices. Therefore it is necessary that this One also have something to offer. For if He were on earth, He would not be a priest, since there are priests who offer the gifts according to the law;

He did have something to offer…His blood! Hebrews 8:3-4 He did have something to offer…His blood!

Heb. 8:5-6 Who serve the copy and shadow of the heavenly things, as Moses was divinely instructed when he was about to make the tabernacle. For He said, “See that you make all things according to the pattern shown you on the mountain.” But now He has obtained a more excellent ministry, inasmuch as He is also Mediator of a better covenant, which was established on better promises.

Hebrews 8:5-6 – It’s just better! This better Priest had a better sacrifice and enters the real Tabernacle, not the copy, so He has a better ministry and mediates a better covenant based on better promises!

Hebrews 8:5-6 – It’s just better! Why in the world would you go back??

Heb. 8:7-8 For if that first covenant had been faultless, then no place would have been sought for a second. Because finding fault with them, He says: “Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah—

Hebrews 8:7-8 – Out with the Old The Old Testament (Covenant) was imperfect due to the people. Rom. 8:3-4

The covenant of promise. Abrahamic covenant The covenant of promise. Gen 12:1-3; confirmed, 13:14-17; 15:1-7; 17:1-8 Abraham’s posterity was to be made a great nation. In him (through Christ) all the families of the earth were to be blessed (Gal 3:16; Jn 8:56-58).

The legal covenant, given solely to Israel (Ex 20:1-31:18). Mosaic covenant The legal covenant, given solely to Israel (Ex 20:1-31:18). It consisted of the commandments (Ex 20:1-26); the judgments (social) (Ex 21:1; 24:11) and the ordinances (religious); (Ex 24:12-31:18); also called the law. It was a conditional covenant of works.

Davidic covenant The kingdom covenant regulating the temporal and eternal rule of David’s posterity (2 Sam 7:4-17, 1 Chr. 17:4-15). It secures in perpetuity to the Davidic ‘house’ rule and a kingdom. It is fulfilled in Christ as the World’s Savior and Israel’s coming King (Acts 1:6; Rev 19:16; 20:4-6).

The covenant regulating Israel’s tenure of the land of Canaan Palestinian covenant The covenant regulating Israel’s tenure of the land of Canaan (Deut. 30:1-10) Its blessings are conditioned upon obedience (30:8, 10), but fulfillment is guaranteed by the new covenant.

Jer. 31:31-33; Mt 26:28; Mk 14:24; Lk 22:20; Heb. 8:8-12 New covenant The covenant of unconditional blessing based upon the finished redemption of Christ. Jer. 31:31-33; Mt 26:28; Mk 14:24; Lk 22:20; Heb. 8:8-12 It is ratified for the Church now, but realized in the Kingdom.

New covenant It secures blessing for the church, flowing from the Abrahamic covenant (Gal 3:13-20), and secures all covenant blessings to converted Israel, including those of the Abrahamic, Palestinian, and Davidic covenants. This covenant is unconditional, final and irreversible.

Hebrews 8:7-8 – Out with the Old The Old Testament (Covenant) was imperfect due to the people. Rom. 8:3-4

Hebrews 8:7-8 – Out with the Old The Old Testament (Covenant) was imperfect due to the people. Rom. 8:3-4

Heb. 8:9 not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they did not continue in My covenant, and I disregarded them, says the Lord.

Hebrews 8:8-9 – Out with the Old This reference is to the Law, the Mosaic Covenant.

Heb. 8:10 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put My laws in their mind and write them on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people.

Hebrews 8:10 – In with the New This is inaugurated and ratified in Christ for us, but realized in the Kingdom.

#1 = An Inner Inclination to Obey We have an inner self that does not sin and desires righteousness. James 1:23; 1 John 3:9

#1 = An Inner Inclination to Obey His laws are on our hearts and minds. At the deepest level of our being it is natural, even desirable, for us to obey.

James 1:22-24  But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror; for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was. But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does.

#1 = An Inner Inclination to Obey In one sense, it is entirely “natural” for us to obey God’s Word.

#1 = An Inner Inclination to Obey Laws are multiplied because of man’s sinfulness!

#2 = A Firm Relationship with God His is our God and we are His people.

#2 = A Firm Relationship with God Our security in Christ The permanence of the Spirit Positional or relational truths Difference in temporal judgments

#2 = A Firm Relationship with God The life we are given is eternal life (Jn. 6:47) We are joined to Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection (Rom. 6) We are “in Christ” (1 Cor. 12:13; Eph. 2:6)

#2 = A Firm Relationship with God Assurance leads to growth!

Heb. 8:11-12  None of them shall teach his neighbor, and none his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them. For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.”

We know God in a way the average OT saint could only dream about. #3 = A Knowledge of God We know God in a way the average OT saint could only dream about.

John 1:14  And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.

John 1:16-18  And of His fullness we have all received, and grace for grace. For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. No one has seen God at any time. The only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has declared Him.

“Grace for grace” = “Grace replacing grace” #3 = A Knowledge of God “Grace for grace” = “Grace replacing grace” There is no OT God vs. NT God. People don’t see grace in the OT because they’re not reading it right.

God could have judged Israel a thousand times and didn’t. #3 = A Knowledge of God God could have judged Israel a thousand times and didn’t. Grace grows throughout OT!

#3 = A Knowledge of God Revelation in Jesus The Cross The Church Our individual union with Christ The love of God in Christ The Suffering and the Ruling Messiah in One Rom. 11 – The Plan!

#4 = Complete Forgiveness of Sins “I will remember no more” The sins of the past are in the past!

#4 = Complete Forgiveness of Sins Access to God is never hindered by sin. Sins are no longer imputed!

Heb. 8:13 In that He says, “A new covenant,” He has made the first obsolete. Now what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away.

The New Covenant One thing is clear; the inadequacy of the OC demonstrated the clear need for more grace!

The OT laid the groundwork for a relationship with God. The New Covenant The OT laid the groundwork for a relationship with God.

The New Covenant Many of the theologies growing in popularity today are understandably afraid that people will “get away with something” when grace is preached.

But, you can never improve on the Word of God. The New Covenant But, you can never improve on the Word of God. They all see failures, too. They don’t end up honoring the Lord better.

lives motivated by His grace and mercy. The New Covenant God knows there will be rebels, but He also wants to build a people who live rewardable lives, lives motivated by His grace and mercy.

God wants to display trophies of His grace. The New Covenant God wants to display trophies of His grace. And, the practical lordship of Jesus Christ never comes any other way.

Theme of Hebrews By persevering faith, we can have partnership with God’s King-Priest Son!
