Unit 3 – Key Area 1 Divisions of the nervous system and parts of the brain
KA 1: Divisions of the nervous system and parts of the brain (a) CNS Central Nervous System (f) Localisation of brain functions The Nervous System (b) PNS Peripheral Nervous System (e) Cerebral Cortex (c) Medulla and Cerebellum (d) Limbic System
The Nervous System Consists of the Central Nervous System (brain and spinal cord) Peripheral Nervous System (motor and sensory nerves only).
The Nervous System The Central Nervous System (CNS) Peripheral Nervous System (PNS) Brain Spinal Cord Autonomic Nervous system (ANS) Somatic Nervous system (SNS) Sympathetic Parasympathetic
The Central Nervous System The central nervous system is made up of; The brain The spinal cord This is where impulses received from the sensory neurons are interpreted. A response is then sent to effector organs via motor neurons. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cUGuWh2UeMk (up to 2:10)
The Central Nervous System Sensory neurons carry sensory information from the body and the external environment to the CNS. The brain analyses, processes and stores some of the information received. The information is also used to make decisions regarding appropriate responses and behaviours.
The Central Nervous System Motor responses (carried out by effectors) include: initiating muscular contractions (e.g. to pull your hand away from heat) glandular secretions (e.g. release of insulin after a meal)
