Next steps toward the beam test M. Deveaux

Another speaker: P. Staszel P. Staszel, 9th October 2012 Idea: Complement NA61/SHINE with a vertex detector

The NA61 beam telescope MIMOSA-26AHR 1152x576 pixels of 18.4x18.4µm² 3.5 µm resolution, 0.05% X0 Readout time: 115.2 µs Proposed text: The SAVD will be located in a helium box close to the target of the NA61 experiment. It consists of two spectrumeter arms with 4 stations each. The stations are located 5, 10, 15 and 20 cm from the target. The total surface of the device is 32 cm², which is considered as a good compromise between good detection efficiency and low technological complexity. -> Animate The SAVD will rely on the MIMOSA-26AHR sensors, which are known from the EUDet telescope and quite similar to the sensors, which are successfully operated in the STAR-HFT. The sensors have … pixels with …. pitch turning into a 3.5µm spatial resolution. Moreover, they are routinely thinned to 50µm and their readout time is 115.2 µs. The sensors will be installed on actively cooled carbon fibre adders, which are being produced for the ALICE ITS. It is expected that the stations will obtain a total material budget of <0.4% radiation length, cables and sensors included. Info for the speaker: ALICE is a little better, we have added a layer of carbon fibre, which is to match the ladder to the size of the sensor and to ease the integration of the sensors. Fundamentals: 4 stations @ 5;10;15;20 cm Located in a helium box. Total surface: 32 cm² Ladders: ALICE ITS (upgrade) Liquid cooled Material budget (all included): < 0.4% X0

Working packages (according to Pb-Addon) OK OK

Integration of the ladders Sensor Flex Cable Missing Glue Glue 1 working week Carbon fibre plates 2 working weeks Bonding Unknown Glue Holding tools for ladder Missing Transport to Krakow 2 days Transport tools Missing

Open items – Flex cable Sensor Flex Cable Missing Must be low material Must be fine pitch => Non standard device Offers (prices without VAT (?)): ILFA Good experiences in the past Equipped and experienced for the task High cost (1865€), long delivery time 40-50 working days Multi-CB Bad experiences in the past (specs repeatedly not met for Mi26 boards) Reduced cost, faster delivery (1000€), 9-15 working days Purchase of sensor flex => critical path of the project Personal proposal: Go ILFA (only one shot)

Integration of the ladders Sensor Flex Cable Missing Glue Glue 2 months? 1 working week Carbon fibre plates 2 working weeks Bonding Unknown Glue Holding tools for ladder Missing Transport to Krakow 2 days Transport tools Missing

Open items – Holding and transport tools Holding tool for placing the CF plates on ladders: Responsability not obvious Not available or designed so far Situation at IKF Currently few manpower for mechanical design (lost know how) Slow response of mechanical workshop (min. 6 weeks) Few knowledge on what is reasonable Support from CERN (Gregory needed) Design/construction at CERN possible? Same argument holds for transport tools. Design and construction needs to be started, soon.

Integration of the ladders Sensor Flex Cable Missing Glue Glue 2 months? 1 working week Carbon fibre plates 2 working weeks Bonding Unknown Glue Holding tools for ladder Missing Transport to Krakow 2 days Test – 7 days Transport tools Missing Time estimate: ~ 1st June

Additional issues Status of the FPGA code of the TRB3 boards Code has been successfully used during a beam time BUT: Code is not considered robust for physics Trigger handling => OK. Trigger number handling=? Sensors operated synchronous, loss of synchronization detection=? Buffer overflow handling was found buggy after review. Issues should be addressed before next beam time. Possible help: Q. Li (PhD on FPGA data analysis of MIMOSA-26)

Electronic components Item Cost (without VAT) Delivery time Manufacturer 8x TRB3 Addon 720 2 Months GSI 12 x CB 3.5 k€ 1 Month Visatronic (cheapest) 12 x FEB >350 € To be discussed 25 x FPC FEB-CB ? Maybe available Later delivery is acceptable… but production has to start ASAP in any case.

Working packages (according to Pb-Addon) OK Quite some issues with 3 working packages. 18 other major working packages open. Do we have a project plan, ressources and manpower?
