Presentation transcript:

The JAK-STAT signaling system represents a series of reactions that take place when a hormone binds a receptor that uses this system. While the hormone binds the receptor on the outside of the cell surface, these reactions take place on the inside of the cell. Earlier steps take place in the cytoplasm, while the final steps take place in the nucleus. Receptors that use the JAK-STAT system include GH and the cytokines. JAK, janus kinase; STAT, signal transducer and activator of transcription; MEK, MAP kinase and ERK activator kinase; ERK, extracellular signal-regulated kinase; TF, transcription factor; CIS, cytokine inducible SH2-containing protein; PIAS, protein inhibitor of activated STAT; GRB2, growth factor receptor-bound protein-2; IRS-1, insulin receptor substrate-1; ISRE/GAS, interferon-stimulated response element/IFN gamma activation site; SHP, Src-homology-2 containing protein tyrosine phosphatase-1 and -2; SOCS, suppressor of cytokine signaling; IGFBP-3, insulin-like growth factor binding protein-3; PTPases, protein tyrosine phosphatases; PI3K, phosphoinositide 3-kinase.
