For fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts and legumes, long-chain (ω-3) fats, and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), a higher score corresponded to higher intake. For trans fat, sugar-sweetened beverages, red and/or processed meat, and sodium, a higher score corresponded to lower intake. For alcohol, we assigned the highest score to moderate, and the lowest score to heavy, alcohol consumers. Nondrinkers received a score of 2.5. DHA indicates docosahexaenoic acid; EPA, eicosapentaenoic acid; and PUFA, polyunsaturated fatty acid. Date of download: 10/16/2017 Copyright © 2014 American Medical Association. All rights reserved.

Participants with more than 12 completed years of education attainment and a poverty income ratio of at least 3.5 were categorized as high SES; participants with less than 12 years educational attainment and a poverty income ratio of less than 1.30 were categorized as low SES; and others were classified as medium SES. Values were estimated from multivariate linear regression analysis by adjusting for total energy intake (continuous), sex (male, female), age group (20-39, 40-64, ≥65 y), race/ethnicity (non-Hispanic white, non-Hispanic black, Mexican American, other), and household size.
