Recognizing Symbolism and Allegory (1 minute alone) Think about the meaning of chapter 4’s title: “Painted Faces and Long Hair”. What does it symbolize? (2 min. partners) Discuss the significance + be ready to share out.

POSSIBLE ANSWERS (DO NOT COPY): Painted - hidden identity masking the truth Faces – our real selves our natural state of man Long – things gone unkempt represented the passage of time Hair – natural state Long hair – a barbaric, primitive, wild, chaotic state
