Learning Goal locate places and regions of importance in the United States during the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries.[8.10A] This is what we are learning how to do today For today’s activities we are using a PENCIL ONLY

JUMPSTART (Mapping Lab Day 2) Same seats as yesterday please. Using the features in the above chart, please write and complete the following sentences using your prior knowledge of geography: The most helpful physical feature to build a settlement by would be______________ because… The least helpful physical feature to build a settlement by would be______________ because… Mountains River Ocean Plains (flat land)

PreAP JUMPSTART (Mapping Lab Day 2) Same seats as yesterday please. Using the following list of features, which do you think would be the most helpful to settle by and which would be the least helpful to settle by? You MUST explain your choice: Mountains River Ocean Plains (flat land)

PreAP Summary Questions These need to be answered on a sheet of paper that you will turn in with your maps: These need to be answered in complete sentences: What physical features might have caused the majority of settlers to remain on or close to the Atlantic Coast? How might the land and climate of southern colonies have helped agriculture to become a main economic activity in this region? Why was farming not a main economic activity in the Northeast? What possible benefits might the Mississippi River provide to settlers?

Map of U.S. Population Distribution 6th JUMPSTART (Mapping Lab Round 1) Sit at your seat number please. Use this map to answer the following in your journal: What do the red dots represent on this map? What might be a reason that there are more red dots in the Northeast? Map of U.S. Population Distribution

Mapping Lab Instructions This is a partner race! After each round, a teacher must check and sign your map before you can move on. Before you are allowed to proceed, your physical and political features must be labeled accurately AND neatly There will be a prize for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place Your completed maps are also your FIRST DAILY GRADES

Things to Remember… READ THE INSTRUCTIONS for each round! They are different each time. Use your neatest handwriting. Make sure you are labeling the entire river. Make sure you are labeling the entire mountain range. You DO NOT have to color in the water. Just write over the labels in blue. Use the ^^^ symbol for mountains.

OL Summary Questions These need to be answered on a sheet of paper that you will turn in with your maps: These need to be answered in complete sentences: Why might the Appalachian Mountains have caused the settlers to remain on or close to the Atlantic Coast? What type of land (soil) and climate (weather) must the southern colonies have had that helped agriculture (farming) to become a main economic activity in this region? Think about the land and climate of the North. Why was farming not as successful in the Northeast as it was in the South? What possible benefits might the Mississippi River provide to settlers?
