William Shakespeare Who is he?

Who was William Shakespeare? He was born in April 1564 and baptized April 26, 1564. He was born in the city of Stratford-upon-Avon.

Schooling He went to grammar school in Stratford, where he probably learned Latin and Greek. Attended school until he was 13 years old.

Did he marry? In 1582, when he was 18 years old, William married Anne Hathaway, who was 26. They had three children together: Susanna, Judith and Hamnet (twins).

Career He was an English poet and playwright widely regarded as the greatest writer of the English language He wrote about 36 plays and 154 sonnets, as well as a variety of other poems. He moved to London between 1585 and 1592 to become an actor and playwright. By 1592, Shakespeare was a playwright in London. His first published work was “Venus and Adonis.”

Cont. Career By late 1594, Shakespeare was an actor, writer and part-owner of a playing company, known as the Lord Chamberlain's Men. Queen Elizabeth I loved plays and protected acting companies. Shakespeare wrote and performed several plays for the queen at The Globe Theater By 1599, Shakespeare was part owner of the Globe, one of the newest theaters. In 1613 his play Henry VIII was performing and started a fire. The whole theater burned to the ground.

His Works He wrote 36 plays and 154 sonnets and poems. His first play was Henry VI. Macbeth was his final great tragedy. In 1623 his friends published First Folio Edition. This contained plays, sonnets and poems from his early works. His works were well-established classics by 1709.

Shakespeare Death He passed away April 23, 1616 at the age of 52. He was buried in Holy Trinity Church in Stratford-upon-Avon. His gravestone has the following inscription: Good friend, for Jesus' sake forbear, To dig the dust enclosèd here. Blest be the man that spares these stones, And cursed be he that moves my bones.
