Mr Henderson - Assistant Head teacher Year 9 2017-18 Key Stage 4 Pt 1 Welcome Introductions Mr Henderson - Assistant Head teacher Mrs Norman - Head of MFL.

Tonight's meeting Changes to the Year 9 curriculum KS4 choices and EBACC Why study Modern Languages Choices for Year 9 Arts Timescales

Reasons for Change Freedom to design our curriculum Move towards a more personalised curriculum rather than one size fits all Removal of SATS in English Maths and Science Increased emphasis on GCSE and other L2 qualifications at post 18 Greater emphasis on academic subjects and EBACC

Compulsory subjects in Years 9 English Maths Science Technology History * Geography * Religious Studies ICT Modern Languages PE Learning 4 Life * depending on choices

What will be different? Core subjects start GCSE work in Year 9 Other subjects also start working on GCSE level work and develop skills, but there are no exams taken Technology will allow students a choice of Design area to concentrate on during the summer term (Food, Textiles or Resistant Materials)

What else is different? Previously all students studied 13 subjects in Year 9. We are reducing the total number of subjects. Choose from Arts subjects : 2 from 4 Latin for those wishing to do Latin will study it. Technology ‘elective’ in March for summer term project.

Year 10 and 11 Compulsory subjects English. English Literature Maths Science –3 GCSEs Learning 4 Life PE Most will be expected to also study Ebacc set of subjects.

Ebacc English + English Literature Maths Sciences x 3 French or German, Latin for those having done it inY9 Geography or History. Plus 2 other choices To achieve the “Ebacc “ C grade minimum in all 5 areas. (depending on what is considered a “C” grade.)

Ebacc Government drive to insist all students study a more academic curriculum So for students with Higher attainment from primary it is essential for them to seriously consider the full set of “Ebacc” subjects. All students are encouraged to do so, if they wish to.

Great Reasons to Study a Foreign Language To build skills: Communication skills are greatly enhanced by studying foreign languages For cognitive health: health advantages can include an improvement in your memory. To increase cultural knowledge: This cultural aspect helps bring language to life To begin the cycle of language learning: Having knowledge of one foreign language makes it easier to learn another language. To improve the native language’s vocabulary: learning a foreign language improves your understanding of the mechanics of your own language. To enhance opportunities for travel whilst studying: Some wonderful travel opportunities can develop whilst studying When looking for a job + for long-term career prospects = WORLD MARKET: it is not enough to just speak English.

GLOBAL EMPLOYABILITY – Views from UK Government 75% of the world speaks no English. - Routes into Languages Lack of language skills costs the UK £48,000,000,000 a year in lost trade - Department for Business, Innovation and Skills).  Quoted in The Guardian  70% of UK businesses would welcome someone with language skills. Confederation of British Industry “Language skills are vital for our exports, education, public services and diplomacy.” Languages will remain vital to trade, business and growth of the UK economy. All Party Parliamentary Group on Modern Foreign Languages.   “Brexit means higher priority for language skills. If we found it challenging to deal with the 24 official and working languages of the EU and the Single Market, let’s consider that there are 164 members of the World Trade Organisation.  Each potential trading partner and regulator will be requiring precise negotiations. New relationships require trust, reliability and cultural empathy – those soft skills that come from knowledge of other languages and cultures.”- Bernadette Holmes MP. Regardless of your view when it comes to leave or remain, and regardless of what kind of Brexit we go through, ¨ If I’m selling to you, I speak your language.  If you’re selling to me, dann müssen sie Deutsch sprechen” – Willy Brandt

How can you support your child to make expected progress in MFL? Regular vocabulary learning = vocabulary booklet/Quizlet Complete Homework Developed sentences (spoken and writtem) = When? Where? With whom? How? Why? 3 tenses = verb tables Year 8 Assessment week - from Monday 3rd April 2017

Choices for Year 9 Arts Timescales Tonight's meeting Choices for Year 9 Arts Timescales

Arts choice - important.. Choose carefully Make clear 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th favourite subject in Arts . Courses will be allocated in priority giving you the two highest priority we can. Usually 1st and 2nd or 1st and 3rd Impossible to give everyone their 1st and 2nd choices.
