“Powerful Quake Devastates Central Mexico”

Thirty-two years to the day after an earthquake killed thousands of people in Mexico, a powerful quake rattled the country's central region Tuesday. Residents had just hours before taken part in large simulated-earthquake drill to mark the anniversary, and many had just returned to their desks when the real one hit. Buildings shivered in Mexico City, and dozens collapsed, sending clouds of dust skyward. "It was one of the worst feelings I've ever experienced in my life. I could barely stand up. There was glass falling everywhere. I really thought the building was going to fall," reporter Emily Green told NPR from Mexico City. "It was a terrifying experience.” In its preliminary assessment, the U.S. Geological Survey said the magnitude 7.1 earthquake's epicenter was 75 miles southeast of Mexico City. The densely populated city is "especially vulnerable to earthquakes, because much of it is built on a former lake bed, which can amplify the effects of distant quakes.” The head of Mexico's civil defense agency has confirmed 217 people were killed in Tuesday's earthquake. The earthquake also comes less than two weeks after a massive temblor struck southern Mexico.

In Other News Hurricane Maria made landfall Wednesday morning as a strong Category 4 storm in southeast Puerto Rico, near the city of Yabucoa, the National Hurricane Center said. At landfall, Maria had sustained winds of 155 mph, just 2 mph short of Category 5 status. It was the first Category 4 hurricane to make landfall in Puerto Rico since 1932. Thousands of Puerto Ricans heeded the calls of government officials and have taken refuge in shelters. "That teams stinks.” "Those refs are trash.” "I wish I never signed up for this.” Those were just some of the comments we got when we asked a group of elementary and middle school students to demonstrate bad sportsmanship. If you've been around kids in an athletic setting, you no doubt have heard comments like those -- and plenty worse -- from bad sports. Losing is not easy for many kids, and being a graceful winner can in some ways be even harder, so the question becomes: what can parents do to teach their children good sportsmanship? http://www.cnn.com/2017/09/20/health/sportsmanship-teaching-kids-parenting/index.html
