Unit 1 – Life Sciences: Cells, Tissues, Organs, and Systems What characteristics do you think determine if something is alive? Science 8 – Mr Palmer

Living Things Today we will learn what living things are. You will learn the characteristics of living things. These 6 characteristics are true of all living things. You will use this to categorize pictures as either living or non-living.

Living things have cells Tree: http://www.danielcrowley.com/slides/Tree%20Trunk.jpg Cells: http://www.britishmuseum.org/images/handkerchief_cells_216x216.jpg

Living things reproduce http://machartshorn.com/gallery/parent/parent01.jpg

Non-living things do not reproduce http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/e2/Rain_ot_ocean_beach.jpg

Living things sense and respond to changes Running deer: http://www.knowledgerush.com/wiki_image/3/38/Deer_running_thumbnail.jpg Standing deer: http://www.floridaconservation.org/critters/images/deer.jpg Bang: http://www.hgsc.bcm.tmc.edu/downloads/graphics/Bang.jpg

Living things grow and develop Puppy: http://www.diypuppytraining.com/puppy.jpg Dog: http://www.wisebuy.co.uk/images/content/dogs%20copy%20copy.JPG

Non-living things do not grow and do not develop Lamp: http://freshome.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/06/clasic-lamp.jpg

Living things use energy http://www.topicsites.com/health-fitness/woman-eating-apple.jpg

Non-living things do no use energy http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1136/1150786357_c9d51daa94.jpg?v=0

Living things move http://static.howstuffworks.com/gif/venus-flytrap3.jpg

Non-living things do not move http://www.geekologie.com/2007/07/30/possessed-books.jpg

And now a quiz! Look at each picture. Think about what is true of all living things. Remember, to be a living thing, something must have all 6 characteristics: move sense and respond to change use energy grow and develop reproduce have one or more cells Answer each of the following as “living” or “non-living.”
