Harold Wilson: 6 wasted years? What can we learn from this picture?

Harold Wilson: 6 wasted years?

What can we learn from this source? How does he appeal to the masses? Positives and Negatives

What was the situation when Wilson took over? The Conservatives claimed there was a £400 million deficit. It turned out it was double that figure

You are the Chancellor – What would you do?

How can you quickly try to resolve a deficit How can you quickly try to resolve a deficit? You are the chancellor – what would you do? Devaluation = Devalue the pound. This will make British products cheaper and more appealing to foreign markets so more money will come into the country. Imports and travel more expensive, harder/more expensive to get involved in world affairs. It makes your country look weaker internationally Deflation = Decline in prices, goods and services (age of austerity). Monthly budget better for working and middle class. Loans appealing. Hits rich people as value of assets fall. It helps narrow the gap between rich and poor. Lower profits means companies have to make redundancies. Lower wages. Goes against your political manifesto where you promised change

Wilson had another problem. George Brown How do you solve a problem like George Brown? Do you get rid, or accommodate him? What position do you give him? Do you give him a position in the cabinet? Explain your decision

Wilson went for option C Wilson went for option C! Solving it internally and created a new position exclusively for Brown. In the DEA. Try to summarise it in 141 character/30 word tweet.
