What is the geography and climate of the colony? Virginia was located in the south so it had a warmer climate compared to the other colonies. The landscape was mountains, coastal plains, and valleys.

What were the overall religious practices? The virginians were forced to worship the Anglican Church and keep up with taxes.

Food in the colony They grew wheat, rice, barley, oats, rye, corn, pumpkins, squash, and beans. They also ate fish, poultry, beef, and pork.

What education was available in the colony? Wealthy parents would hire a private tutor to teach their children and some families would send them to back to England or to William and Mary for a higher education. Families that were less wealthy would sometimes hire a tutor and share them with other families. This made the cost more affordable.

What did colonist do for fun? They had sports, card games, music and plays. The children also had games such as marbles.

Was the colony successful or a failure? The Virginia colony of Jamestown was the first colony that was established. They were successful and eventually became part of the United States.

Interesting facts Virginia’s name came from Queen Elizabeth I because she was also referred to as the Virgin Queen. The colony was almost destroyed in 1610 because of disease but new settlers arrived with supplies. Four of the first five presidents lived in Virginia.
