New Orleans & Ohio telegraph lessees Formed in 1853 with the merger of competitors New Orleans & Ohio Telegraph Company and Louisville and New Orleans Telegraph Company. The Western Union Telegraph Company Originally formed in 1851 as the New York and Mississippi Valley Printing Telegraph Company, Western Union would go on to become the first transcontinental telecommunications company. It was one of the first companies established following Samuel Morse’s invention of the telegraph and grew to national prominence as it absorbed hundreds of competitors. St. Louis and New Orleans Telegraph Line An early St. Louis and New Orleans Telegraph Line stock certificate dated October 28, 1850. Signed by Telegraph Pioneer Taliaferro P. Shaffener. Best Telephone Manufacturing Company An interesting certificate with a vignette depicting an early telephone apparatus. The company manufactured telephones and switching equipment. W. J. The Connecticut Telephone Company Incorporated in 1878 as a member of the Bell Network, the New Haven District Telephone Company was the world’s first telephone exchange company with 21 customers. After being acquired by Jay Gould of Western Union, the company was bought back by Hartford investors in 1880 and reorganized as The Connecticut Telephone Company with former Gov. Marshall Jewell serving as President. Hawaiian Bell Telephone Company Established in 1880 as the first telecommunications company in Hawaii. In 1883, the Hawaiian Bell Telephone Company merged with the Mutual Telephone Company, which bought its competitors, eventually owning all telephone communications on the Hawaiian Islands. Peoples’ Mutual Telephone Company Peoples’ Mutual Telephone Company was created in 1905 to unite various independent telephone lines being set up to allow for communication between towns and settlements in Kansas. Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company Four telephone companies operated by GTE (America’s largest independent telecommunications company of the time) were merged by an Act of the Philippine Legislature and approved by Governor-General Henry L. Stimson in 1928 forming the Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company. The Bell Telephone Company of Pennsylvania The Bell Telephone Company of Philadelphia was established in 1879 to service the city. In 1899, National Bell Telephone, it’s holding company, was bought by AT&T. The name was then changed in 1907 to The Bell Telephone Company of Pennsylvania. Western Union Corporation The Western Union Telegraph Company began operations in 1851. After losing a legal battle with Bell Telephone in 1879, Western Union was forced to abandon its efforts into telephone and focus on telegraphy. By the middle of the 20th century as telegraphy began to become outdated, Western Union Telegraph began pioneering new technology such as teleprinter networking and money order services. American Telephone & Telegraph Company With the advent of the telephone by Alexander Graham Bell, a new age in telecommunications was born. Bell created the American Telephone and Telegraph Company in 1885 to acquire his company Bell Telephone (est. 1877). The North Western Telephone Exchange Company of Minnesota The North Western Telephone Exchange Company was incorporated in December of 1878. The area’s first telephone exchange was operated by Western Union, but do to a court ruling of patent infringement, all of Western Union’s telephone assets were sold to Bell Telephone, the parent company of North Western Telephone Exchange. MCI Communications Corporation Microwave Communications, Inc. was created in 1963, quickly becoming the United States’ second largest telecom provider behind AT&T. MCI was founded on the basis of short distance two way radio communications that would be carried over long distances by a series of relay stations. The company’s operation was met with opposition by AT&T due to its monopoly on telephone services in the country. MCI would be important in bringing about the legislature ending AT&T unrivaled telephone operations. United Telecommunications, Inc. United Telecommunications, Inc. arose in 1972 with the renaming of United Utilities. The company traces its roots to the Brown Telephone Company, created in Kansas in 1899. Brown Telephone absorbed other companies and through several mergers became United Telephone and Electric, which would be reorganized as United Utilities following the Great Depression. In the late 1980’s, United Telecom took part in the formation of US Sprint and subsequently bought control of the company. Deutsche Telekom Formed in 1996, Deutsche Telekom is the controlling shareholder of T-Mobile, the United States’ third largest mobile provider. The company was originally under government control, arising from reform of the Deutsche Bundespost . This reform created three entities, one being Deutsche Bundespost Telekom. Hong Kong Telecommunications Limited Hong Kong Telecommunications Ltd was formed from the 1988 merger of Hong Kong Telephone Company and Cable and Wireless. From 1988 until 2000, Hong Kong Telecom was the leading telecommunications company in Hong Kong. New England Telephone & Telegraph Company signed by Theodore Vail (First President of AT&T) - New York 1883 Historic Stock certificate from the New England Telephone & Telegraph Company issued in 1883. This early Bell Operating Company Stock Certificate which has the signatures of the Company’s President, Theodore Vail and Treasurer, William R. Driver.
