Why do you think there was such a time gap? (Turn and talk) After the failure at Roanoke in 1585, the idea to settle in North America didn’t resurface again until 1606. Why do you think there was such a time gap? (Turn and talk) In 1606 England had a new King and he wanted to renew the quest for colonies. King James

Charter- Can anyone infer what this term means? (Turn and talk)

Several merchants pressed King James for a charter Charter: A document that granting the recipient the right to settle a colony.

With a goal of American Colonies renewed the Virginia Company was formed. The Virginia Company was a Joint-Stock Company. Joint Stock Company- A company in which investors buy stock in return for a share of its future profits. The plan was for the company’s settlers to find gold and establish trade in fish and furs.

In April of 1606 the Company sent 144 settlers in three ships to North America, and they landed in Jamestown in April 1607.

Independent Reading Read the passages “Jamestown Survives” and “More Settlers Come to Virginia” (pages 62 and 63) and answer the following comprehension questions: How did Smith’s leadership help the colony survive? What were the first two years like for Jamestown colonists? How did the colony's relations with Native Americans affect its success? Why was the House of Burgesses important?

Group Work Group 1- Why was there such a big time gap in between the first English Colony and the second? Group 2- Who was the Virginia Company? What was their purpose? Group 3- How are Joint-Stock Company’s still relevant today? Group 4-Why was the Jamestown colony able to prosper in spite of many hardships?
