Sheet Metal Process

Forming Operations-1. Bending is very common forging operation   Forming Operations-1.Bending is very common forging operation. It is an operation to give a turn ,shape to metal rod or plate. This is required for those which have bends shapes. Figure . Types of bending operations

ii) Drawing-This is the operation in which metal gets elongated with a reduction in the cross sectional area. For this, a force is to be applied in a direction perpendicular to the length axis. Classified into follwing type - sheet metal, wire, bar, tube Figure .Drawing

iii) Coining-Metal coining is a forging process by which very fine and intricate details can be created on the surface of workpiece.2) Coining may e used to control surface quality and details on parts.3) Metal coining is a fininshing process for manufacture product. Figure . Coiningning

iii)Embossing-The operation of giving impression of figures, letter or designs on sheet metal part is known as embossing. Sheet metal embossing is a stamping process for producing raised or sunken designs or relief in sheet metal. This process can be made by means of matched male and female roller dies, or by passing sheet or a strip of metal between rolls of the desired pattern. It is often combined with Foil Stamping to create a shiny, 3D effect. Figure. Embossing

Cutting Process

Operation for Cutting Holes 1 Operation for Cutting Holes 1.Piercing/punching-The operation of cutting a hole in sheet of metal by the punch and the die is called piercing.

  i) Punching/ piercing Figure 2.6 Punching

  2. Blanking- i) The operation of cutting of flat sheet to the desired shape is called blanking. Ii)In presswork operation, a strip of the required size, i.e the width and thickness, with the help of shearing operation performed by the punch. Figure . Blanking

Shearing-1) Shearing is also know as die cutting Shearing-1) Shearing is also know as die cutting. It is a process which cuts stock without the formation of chips or the use of buring or melting.2) A punch is used to push a workpiece against the die( or fixed blade) which is fixed. Figure . Common Blank Shapes in Shearing

Lancing- 1)It is operation of cutting a sheet of metal through part of its length and then bending and plastic flow of metal is called drawing. 2)It is done mostly in coolers or electric motor covers to provide air to the motor. 3)It is combine operation of pearcing and bending
