Welcome to Physics 1404!!

For example, see the next slide! Why Study Physics? (Reasons other than the fact that it may be required for your major!) Two of Many Reasons It is obviously vital to the functioning of our modern technology. A less obvious reason is that it is as important to the understanding of our society, our culture, & our history as are, say, good literature & poetry, good art, good music, etc., etc., etc. For example, see the next slide!

A & E's “Top 10” most influential People of the Past Millennium Physicists are listed in red!! 1. Johann Gutenberg 2. Isaac Newton 3. Martin Luther 4. Charles Darwin 5. William Shakespeare 6. Christopher Columbus 7. Karl Marx 8. Albert Einstein 9. Nicolaus Copernicus 10. Galileo Galilei 5 out of 10 were scientists! (Western Culture) Biologist!

Why are they famous?

Important Class Announcements & Calendar Items! 5. Links to help resources web pages 6. Other important items relating to this class. PLEASE!! Get into the habit of checking this page often!

The Announcement Page: Announcements! Linked from the Class Website is: The Announcement Page: http://www.phys.ttu.edu/~cmyles/Phys1404/announce.htm This contains class announcements & major calendar items. Please check it often! You might also check out My Website at: http://www.phys.ttu.edu/~cmyles/

Email Distribution List! Physics 1404 Email Distribution List! It is IMPORTANT that I have your email address!!! I will construct an email distribution list & use it to make important class announcements!!! PLEASE tell me if you change your email address!

Math Review in Appendix B! Math Pre-Requisites Math is the Language of Physics!! But, this is NOT a math course!! I simply will not have time to teach math to you! I must assume that you know it! Primary difficulties with the course are often math-related!! Pre-Requisites = Math 1320: Algebra & Math 1321: Trig Or equivalent courses somewhere else! Take advantage of the: Math Review in Appendix B!

Physics Pre-Requisite Physics 1403, General Physics I Or an equivalent Physics course elsewhere. I will not have time to teach you Physics I! (& it is not my job to do so!) I must assume that you know it! Some difficulties with the course are often related to a poor knowledge of Physics I concepts!!

Physics 1404 Laboratory/Discussion This no-credit lab/discussion is a required co-requisite! IF you drop lecture you MUST drop lab also! ATTENTION! LABS START Monday, September 11! NOTE: COME prepared to start, including already having your lab manual!!! You will not be admitted to the first lab without a lab manual. They are for sale by the Society of Physics Students in Science Room 004. The hours they are open are posted on their door

Where to Go for Help?? See the syllabus, which covers this! See Me!! Room 18. During office hours or not (I’m usually not rigid about these). Or call me! Or email me! I respond to email!!! See your Lab/Recitation TA!!! There will be office hours for that person. Get a Tutor!!! The Physics Department Office (Science Room 101) has an approved list.

Supplemental Instruction Sessions!! Where to Go for Help?? Your Fellow Students!!! A very effective strategy is to work on homework & study for quizzes & exams together in a group. This is how most professionals work in the “real world”. Supplemental Instruction Sessions!! Supplemental Instruction (SI) Sessions may be arranged. The Internet!! There are HUGE numbers of Physics Help Web sites! Using Google & typing in “Physics Help” gives about 34,000 hits!!!! I encourage you to try out some. Class Website!

ADVANTAGE OF THE MANY HELP RESOURCES AVAILABLE!! Bottom Line on Help IF YOU NEED HELP, TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE MANY HELP RESOURCES AVAILABLE!! If you need help & don’t use these resources, only YOU are to blame!

To Succeed in this Course READ the book, which cost you many $$$! It’s most effective to read the material BEFORE I lecture over it! WORK the assigned homework problems!! Before looking at solutions. Copying the solutions will NOT teach you physics. WORK extra problems!

To Succeed in this Course COME TO CLASS!! There’s correlation between attendance & grade! Also, skipping means that you are WASTING the tuition & fees that you (or someone) paid! With tuition & fees for a full-time student, each class meeting costs about $27. Each time you skip, you are throwing away about $27!! After a while this adds up! My lectures may not be entertaining or brilliant, but I do expose you to the material.

Commercial Website WebAssign On-Line Homework Commercial Website WebAssign On-line homework will be assigned & graded at the WebAssign site. Doing homework is the most effective means of learning physics, which is impossible without working problems! Once you are registered at WebAssign, you’ll be able to get assignments & submit homework. I’ll ATTEMPT to post assignments at the beginning of each chapter. They will be due at 11:30pm 4 to 5 days later. You’ll be able to get answers after the due date.

To access WebAssign, login at https://www.WebAssign.net/. I’ve passed out instructions about how to do this. If you don’t have the Student Access Kit which comes with a new book, you can purchase one on the WebAssign site Please do this ASAP! NOTE: This site is not at TTU & you should give yourself plenty of time before the deadline for submitting answers–sometimes the network can be slow or down.

NEWTON’S LAWS OF MOTION!! THE THEME OF PHYSICS I WAS NEWTON’S LAWS OF MOTION!! Essentially all topics that were discussed in that course are related directly or indirectly to Newton’s Laws!!

Maxwell’s Equations!! MAWELL’S EQUATIONS OF ELECTROMAGNETISM!! THE THEME OF PHYSICS II IS MAWELL’S EQUATIONS OF ELECTROMAGNETISM!! Essentially all topics that will discussed in this course are related directly or indirectly to Maxwell’s Equations!! (of Electromagnetism!)

Some of us call this course “Fire Hose Physics”! This is because the Physics knowledge & concepts come at you so fast, your learning something is analogous to you trying to drink out of a fire hose!
