About the author : Guy de Maupassant was a well-known French novelist and short- story writer. “The diamond necklace” was his best short story. He had a fine use of irony(讽刺).

Scan the play and find out: Characters: How many: Three Who: Jeanne, Mathilde and Pierre Loisel Scenes: How many: Three When and where: A park in Paris,in1870

Read the play and answer the questions for Scene One: Why didn’t Jeanne recognize Mathilde at first? Why did Mathilde look very old? What was her life like in the past 10 years? Where did Pierre work then?

Discussion Why did Pierre accept the invitation?

Questions for Scene Two: Why did Pierre buy a new dress for his wife? And how much was the new evening dress worth? Why did she say she couldn’t be the only person who wasn’t wearing jewellery? Why did she want to borrow some jewellery instead of buying some? Why did they ask Jeanne for help?

Discussion What kind of necklace did Mathilde borrow, can you guess?

Questions for Scene Three: How did they think of the ball? And what happened on their way home? What did they do after they lost the necklace? How much was the necklace worth , which Mathilde borrowed? What was the truth about the lost necklace?

Discussion 1. What did they do to pay off the debt? 2. What kind of person was Mathilde, do you think? Why?

Make up the end of the story: The story hasn’t been finished yet. Can you imagine what will happen to Mathilde after she knows the truth? Continue the story.

Homework: Retell the story. Act out the play.
