Year 4 Welcome Meeting

Year 4 Learning Behaviour Encouraging independence. Sitting at a desk, and using coloured cups for all learning. Following a set of instructions first time.

Homework The Year 4 children are set Maths (mathletics) and Spelling homework on Friday. In addition to this they may be set a Topic project, Science research, Religion work or an English writing or reading task. ALL homework is to be returned to their teacher on the following Wednesday. Also, we ask that you sign your child’s reading record every day to show that they have read. Children who can show they have read 4 nights a week will be rewarded with a special sticker and green signature. We do expect the correct amount of time to be spent on homework and for it to be high quality.

How can parents help? The best help is interest taken in learning and progress. Supporting homework. Good communication between the school and home. Getting a good sleep on a school night!

How can I help with writing? Again, reading a variety of texts – the more children read, the more familiar they become with different text types. Home readers- remind children to change. Writing homework– Sentence structure. Spelling – spelling lists / rules every week. Cursive handwriting.

How can I help with reading? Ensure your child reads every night! Encourage them to read fiction and non-fiction. Try to listen to your child read and talk to them about what they are reading. Use the reading questions to encourage discussion of key themes. Reading homework.

How can I help with Maths? Support with homework – not just helping with the Maths but reading the question can really help. Times tables. Number bonds to 100. Written methods for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Help your child to check their work through – this will help them to spot mistakes that can sometimes be easily fixed.

Key times. Tuesday and Thursday- PE days. Wednesday- Library session. Homework- Out Friday, In Wednesday. Weekly star of the week.
