The App Revolution Anytime Anywhere Any Device Is Making Web GIS Available Everywhere Anytime Anywhere Any Device Talking points: For the past 7+ we have been experiencing a app or mobile revolution I suspect that everyone listening to this presentation has a smartphone, maybe a tablet or other devices Last couple years…mobile apps have overtaken desktops in internet use (http://money.cnn.com/2014/02/28/technology/mobile/mobile-apps-internet) People expect to have access to information…be it maps of data…anytime anywhere, on any device

Dominance of Native Apps Talking Points: What is a native app? Native apps are created for a specific platform and installed directly on the device…as opposed to a web app which runs in a web browser Recent stats from Flurry analytics 90% of the time we spend on devices people are using native app That’s just 10% using a mobile web browser, 2 years ago it was 20%...so we see the use of native apps continues to grow Think about the way you use your smartphone and the services you access. When using Instagram, Facebook, youtube, or email do you open your mobile browser and type in URL? Such as www.twitter.com...login and search you feed? Doubtful. You prefer to use a native app created for that service.

Native app experience to your maps Facebook Twitter Why build a native app? Performance Better user experience Access device features GPS/Compass Camera Contacts Sharing YouTube Note: Mention that this is just an option, many times a JS/HTML web based map is suffiecinet. Also, some things like GPS and camera are available via with HTML5/JS

Why native apps ? Offline Performance App Stores Web apps a common choice for cross platform requirements but do have some limitations. They need to be online and their performance is dictated by the network performance. With native apps obviously you can design your app to work both online and off, you can make use of device specific hardware and performance is dictated by the device. Offline Performance App Stores

The challenge App development is…. Complicated Expensive Time Consuming But there are many challenges with creating native apps. App development is…. Complicated…you need to be a developer…write code Expensive…if you outsource be prepared to spend 10s of thousands of dollars…for a simple app Time consuming…don’t underestimate the time it can take to create an App

5X CODE The challenge iOS Android Linux Windows If you have the developer and resources available figured out to build an app…But for which Platform? iOS and Android? What about Windows, Mac, and Linux? Building native Apps for multiple platforms traditionally requires writing and testing your app once for every platform. Large Organizations with lots of resources…maybe Small shop or one person…almost impossible. Windows Mac

Wanting to turn this into an iOS and Android app they turned to AppStudio for ArcGIS and the Map Tour template.  Without writing any code this Story Map was turned into a beautiful app available on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.  Today we have 3 templates available to anyone with an ArcGIS Account as part of AppStudio for ArcGIS Basic (Map Tour, Map Viewer, and Quick Report).
