A quick review of literary devices plus three fiction elements

What is a literary device? Literary devices are specific language or writing techniques. Writers use these to create text that is clear, interesting, and memorable.

direct characterization (fiction technique) The author tells us directly something about the character. Example: John is really tall. Page 17

internal conflict (fiction element) The character struggles with the question “What kind of person do I want to be?” Page 3

external conflict: struggle with nature (fiction element) Characters battle nature and struggle with the question “Will I survive?” Page 22

Word study tests Why this way? Put your name on the side of the paper that has the numbers of your assigned words. Do not turn the paper back and forth!!!! Stay on one side only! TEST ONLY ON YOUR ASSIGNED WORDS. Stay with me! We will do all the spelling part first! TEST ONLY ON YOUR ASSIGNED WORDS. Listen for the letters! Do the vocabulary meanings last. Use only the correct letter of the word. Test only on your assigned words. Do not write any other words on your test form. If you are turning the paper over, you are not following directions! Normally, If you are a challenge word student, take a sheet of paper and a pen/pencil and sit quietly at the back table. (today I have already given that test.) Read while the other students are testing.
