Introduction to Human Anatomy and Physiology
Anatomy – the study of the structure and shape of body parts and their relationship to each other. Physiology – the study of how the body and its parts work or function.
At the end of this introduction, you will… Define ANATOMY & PHYSIOLOGY Know the levels of organization, from simplest to most complex Describe the body cavities and be able to identify them on a diagram. Describe the ANATOMICAL POSITION Understand the body sections (slices) used to observe internal structures, be able to label them on a diagram (sagittal, transverse, coronal) Describe the body regions and be able to identify them on a diagram
Body Cavities Posterior (Dorsal) = back side Anterior (Ventral) = front side Thoracic = chest (heart, trachea, lungs..) Abdomen = stomach area (spleen, intestines) Pelvic = lower abdomen (bladder, reproductive organs) DIAPHRAGM: Separates the thoracic and pelvic region SEROUS MEMBRANE - covers and surrounds organs SEROUS FLUID - lubricates organs
Axial Portion - head, neck, trunk Appendicular Portion - arms & legs
