Open research data at UiT Bidrag til IPS’ instituttseminar, Amsterdam, 20.-22. september, 207 Torstein Låg Universitetsbiblioteket, UiT Norges artkiske universitet

Outline (for today) 09:00 – 10:15 Introduction on Open Data and data archiving, emphasizing the new UiT guidelines 10:30 – 12:00 Introduction on pre-registration and the seven deadly sins of psychological science 12:45 – 14:15 Lunch cruise (Pick-up at hotel) 14:15 – 14:30 Instructions for the workshop 14:30 – 16:00 Team-based workshop 16:00 – 17:00 Plenary discussion based on team workshop

Objectives for today (Familiarity with recent developments in OA publishing.) Knows the arguments in favour of more openness in science, and is familiar with the research that supports them Is familiar with typical policies of funders and publishers regarding open data, pre-registration, and other OS practices Is able to plan and implement a pre-registered study protocol Begins to know, understand and be able to comply with the new ‘UiTs prinsipper og retningslinjer for forvaltning av forskningsdata’ Is able to accurately express… …the major perceived benefits and obstacles to more openness in own research …what support and guidance is wanted

Afternoon workshop Detailed instructions in afternoon session In a nutshell: What are the benefits, challenges and support needed in order to adopt the Open Science practices of 1) Pre-registering studies 2) Writing data management plans 3) Archiving and sharing data openly Staring point: Your own science!

Outline (for this introduction) New developments in Open Access publishing. The idea of open science (briefly) Why you need to be prepared to share research data openly The policies of academic publishers The policies of research funding agencies NFR (The Research Council of Norway) Horizon 2020 (EU) UiTs prinsipper og retningslinjer for forvaltning av forskningsdata Data management plans UiT Open Research Data (the repository)

OA publishing in 2017

Requirements of research funders: Norwegian Research Council

New developments

Always upload when you register in Cristin And remember… Always upload when you register in Cristin pdf of the published article or the «postprint» (i.e. the final peer reviewed version of the manuscript) Peruse the rules of the UiT publication fund Apply prior to starting submission

Open Science Core Values Empowering everyone to partake in science Easing the transfer from academia to application Nullius in verba (Royal Society motto) Everything pertinent to a supposed scientific result should be published and accessible – to make validation possible

Open Science in a nutshell We believe in the values of science But are not always able to behave in accordance with them, because of Biases Incentives Open Science is about changing incentives and checking biases

Aspects of The Open Science movement Open access Open data Open source Open standards

What publishers are doing Signing the TOP Guidelines Pulling and pushing Some require open data Some encourage open data Badges (e.g. Psychological Science) Offer data-sharing services of their own Wiley’s Data Sharing Service

The TOP (Transparency and Openness Promotion) Guidelines «By developing shared standards for open practices across journals, we hope to translate scientific norms and values into concrete actions and change the current incentive structures to drive researchers’ behavior toward more openness.» Nosek, B. A., Alter, G., Banks, G. C., Borsboom, D., Bowman, S. D., Breckler, S. J., . . . Yarkoni, T. (2015). Promoting an open research culture. Science, 348, 1422-1425. doi:10.1126/science.aab2374 8 standards 3 levels Disclose Require Verify Citation standards Replication Design and analysis transperency Research materials transperency Data transparency Analytic methods (code) transp. What funding agencies are doing Stated goals Improving the quality of research through/and: Reuse of data, using data in new ways and for multiple purposes Transperency and replicability Increasing collaboration Preventing wasted research efforts + better utilisation of public funds Increasing innovation in private and public sectors They are developing their own policies, and building them into their contracts with funded researchers. Two prominent examples: i) The Norwegian Research Council Stated goals: Improving the quality of research through/and Reuse of data, and using data in new ways and for multiple purposes Transperency and replicability Increasing collaboration Preventing wasted research efforts + better utilisation of public funds Increasing innovation in private and public sectors Many of these are recognisable from earlier slide on the core values of the OS movement www.forskningsradet.no/publikasjoner

Highlights from the NFR policy «Åpen som standard.» Guidelines very similar to UiT guidelines The guidelines will be «fulgt opp» through the NFRs «virkemilder» for funding research projects www.forskningsradet.no/publikasjoner

What funding agencies are doing https://ec.europa.eu/research

What funding agencies are doing «As open as possible, as closed as necessary.» Open Access is the default setting for data generated in Horizon 2020. The legal requirements are included in the Grant Agreement (but can be removed by optim out). Projects must meet the followin requirements: …must deposit research data…, preferably in a research data repository. …must then take measure to enable thir parties to access, mine, exploit, reproduce and disseminate (free of charge for any user) this research data.

UiTs prinsipper og retningslinjer «Åpen som standard» «As open as possible,…» Aims and purpose Sound management and sharing of research data Increased transperency and scientific quality

UiTs prinsipper og retningslinjer Premises and definitions UiT owns your data (but not the students’) What is a «forskningsprosjekt»? What is «forskningsdata»?

UiTs prinsipper og retningslinjer The researcher’s (your) responsibilities You are responsible for the data. You are responsible for developing a Data Management Plan You are responsible for storing and archiving your data securely You are responsible for sharing data openly You are responsible for providing the data with metadata in accordance with standards, and description for future use

Data Management Plans (DMPs)

Data Management Plans (DMPs) Who is responsible for what, who has access How data are collected or generated Documentation and metadata Storing during the project Archiving and sharing Ethics and consent

Also see: The NSD checklist http://www.nsd.uib.no/nsddata/arkivering/013_datahandteringsplan.html

Archiving your data opendata.uit.no

Other repositories Storing data with the NSD. See: http://www.nsd.uib.no/nsddata/arkivering/001_send_inn_data.html Other repositories: UiT approved? Ask: research-data@support.uit.no

Files, metadata and documentation Use persistent, non-proprietary formats (e.g. tab separated unicode text in stead of MS Excel). Use consistent naming conventions for files Use descriptive column names for tabular data Documentation in a seperate ReadMe file, explaining files, columns, datatypes, etc.
