Finding Nanaimo: A WebQuest & Blog

Finding Nanaimo- a Pre-Quest Discussion So, you find yourself studying ESL at a small university in Nanaimo, but you don’t know much about this island city. What are some questions that you have? (Teacher will write on the board) How will you find the answers to your questions? This WebQuest was designed to answer the most common questions that students have asked about Nanaimo.

Directions What can you learn about it? You are new to Nanaimo. You don’t know anything about this small and boring city. What can you learn about it? With a partner, please find the answers to the questions. One person will “seek” (find) and the other will “report” (write-down) the answers. You can take turns “seeking” and “reporting”. You have 60 minutes to finish. You must use www.google.ca to find your answers. Please type your answers, in numbered order (1, 2, 3) as a “post” to the blog tab titled “YOUR ANSWERS”: http://wordpress.viu.ca/findingnanaimowebquest/post-your- answers-here/

What does “Nanaimo” mean? What is the population of Nanaimo? Where is the yacht club in Nanaimo? What does yacht mean? What is a famous yearly event in Nanaimo? (hint: you wash in it ) What is the name of the mayor who liked to dress up as a pirate? What industry was Nanaimo famous for? Industry: Economic activity concerned with the processing of raw materials and manufacture of goods in factories

What is the average annual temperature for each season in Nanaimo? a). What dessert is the city famous for? b.) What’s in it? (For example, does it have peanuts in it?) A friend asks you to tell them about the best night activities, and the best restaurants in Nanaimo. Please tell them the names, and how to get to there (directions). You can use google maps for this question. Post your ideas about the best night activities and restaurants on the wordpress blog under the tab Where are the hottest spots in Nanaimo? Feel free to politely argue about the best places to go to on the blog!
