Walking With God Genesis 5:21-27 Two Walks Enoch Walked With God Implications of His Walk Consequences of His Walk Questions About the Walk

Walking With God Genesis 5:21-27 Two Walks The walk (way) of Cain Depraved by nature because he was descended from fallen parents Sinner by choice and deed Rejecter of God’s implementation of grace Produces an ungodly line of descendants who become more and more depraved

Walking With God Genesis 5:21-27 Two Walks The walk (way) of Seth Seth means “appointed one.” Seth also was a depraved sinner. Seth received God’s grace and “people began to call upon the name of the Lord.” “and he died”…“and he died”…“and he died”…

Walking With God Genesis 5:21-27 Two Walks “This is the book (sepher) of the generations (toledoth) of Adam.” All other references talk “of generations.” This could be an actual book – Malachi 3:16; Revelation 20:11-15.

Malachi 3:16 (NASB) 16  Then those who feared the Lord spoke to one another, and the Lord gave attention and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before Him for those who fear the Lord and who esteem His name.

Revelation 20:11-15 (NASB) 11  Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sat upon it, from whose presence earth and heaven fled away, and no place was found for them. 12  And I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne, and books were opened; and another book was opened, which is the book of life; and the dead were judged from the things which were written in the books, according to their deeds.

13  And the sea gave up the dead which were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead which were in them; and they were judged, every one of them according to their deeds. 14  Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. 15  And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

Walking With God Genesis 5:21-27 Two Walks “This is the book (sepher) of the generations (toledoth) of Adam.” All other references talk “of generations.” This could be an actual book – Malachi 3:16; Revelation 20:11-15. Phrase found in one other place – Matt 1:1

Matthew 1:1 (ESV) 1 The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.

Walking With God Genesis 5:21-27 Two Walks “This is the book (sepher) of the generations (toledoth) of Adam.” All other references talk “of generations.” This could be an actual book – Malachi 3:16; Revelation 20:11-15. Phrase found in one other place – Matt 1:1 Adam’s book is the Book of Death. Jesus’ book is the Lamb’s Book of Life. This is also the line of grace!

Walking With God Genesis 5:21-27 Two Walks Lessons from the genealogy God is a personal and caring God. There is a remnant of godly individuals in an ungodly world. There seem to be family relationships to this godly heritage. God is always faithful!

Walking With God Genesis 5:21-27 Enoch Walked With God What do we know about Enoch from scripture – Genesis 5:21-24; Hebrews 11:5; Jude 14-15?

Hebrews 11:5 (ESV) 5  By faith Enoch was taken up so that he should not see death, and he was not found, because God had taken him. Now before he was taken he was commended as having pleased God.

Jude 14-15 (ESV) 14  It was also about these that Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied, saying, “Behold, the Lord comes with ten thousands of his holy ones, 15  to execute judgment on all and to convict all the ungodly of all their deeds of ungodliness that they have committed in such an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things that ungodly sinners have spoken against him.”

Walking With God Genesis 5:21-27 Enoch Walked With God What do we know about Enoch from scripture – Genesis 5:21-24; Hebrews 11:5; Jude 14-15? Seventh from Adam Preacher of righteousness The Lord is coming in judgment. Denunciation of ungodliness Enoch walked with God. Enoch pleased God.

Walking With God Genesis 5:21-27 Implications of His Walk Enoch’s walk with God implies Reconciliation – Amos 3:3

Amos 3:3 (ESV) 3  “Do two walk together, unless they have agreed to meet?

Walking With God Genesis 5:21-27 Implications of His Walk Enoch’s walk with God implies Reconciliation – Amos 3:3 Corresponding nature – Light versus Dark Moral integrity – 1 John 1:6-7

1 John 1:6-7 (ESV) 6  If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. 7  But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.

Walking With God Genesis 5:21-27 Implications of His Walk Enoch’s walk with God implies Reconciliation – Amos 3:3 Corresponding nature – Light versus Dark Moral integrity – 1 John 1:6-7 Spiritual communion – steady progress What was the cause of these things? “he pleased God” … How? By faith – Hebrews 11:6

Walking With God Genesis 5:21-27 Consequences of His Walk What were the results of this kind of faith? Forward progress of a growth in grace A growth in the knowledge of the Lord A deep, settled joy and peace A witness for the Lord

Walking With God Genesis 5:21-27 Questions About His Walk When did this walk begin? At the birth of his first child – Methuselah When did it end? He lived 365 years (one day = one year) How did Enoch leave? He was “translated” (not experiencing death), becoming a type of those who will experience the same thing at the second coming of Christ.
