Vocabulary Romanticism European artistic movement that stressed the individual, imagination, creativity, and emotion. Many different writers thought highly about romanticism because they were influenced by it. Romanticism had a lot to do with the outdoor things and different nature outside.

Vocabulary Hudson River School A school that had artists painting peaceful landscapes of mountains, forests, and rivers. Many people moved west to learn to paint these landscapes. This school was located in the Hudson River Valley in New York.

Vocabulary Transcendentalism A 19th century philosophy that taught the spiritual world is more important than the physical world. Also, people can find truth within themselves through feeling and intuition.

Vocabulary Civil Disobedience One example of this was when Henry David Thoreau didn’t want to pay taxes for war and was sent to jail. Peacefully refusing to obey laws one considers unjust. People did not want to use violence, instead they would protest.

Important People Albert Bierstadt- A man who traveled west to make artwork of landscapes. Ralph Waldo Emerson- An American Writer that helped Americans develop their own beliefs. He was also a transcendentalist. Henry David Thoreau- A transcendentalist that was put in jail for not paying taxes that would supporting the war with Mexico. Margaret Fuller- A transcendentalist that expressed women's’ rights through all of her writing.

Influences on American Art American art was much like American literature, focusing on nature and ones inner emotions. People at the Hudson River School would often travel around to find more beautiful sceneries. Art caused many people to move west to find beautiful sceneries. Slaves ended up forming much of Americas art by creating baskets and pottery instead of paintings and drawings.

Following Ones Conscience Authors such as Ralph Waldo inspired many to improve themselves spiritually. People started to look within themselves, books, and nature to improve their lives. People began to have strong spiritual beliefs, and many started to believe that their spiritual life was more important than then the non-spiritual world they lived in. Unjust laws were now peacefully protested instead of using violence to protest. Some were punished by the law because they refused to pay taxes that supported violent wars.

American Art Art helped to shape America’s culture. Also, it helped to influence different ideas in the future towards American Art. Made by: Alex Hadd Rachael Furnari Sarah Koch Sean Stalker
