THE SOLAR SYSTEM

Hi, I’m Sunny, your home star, the Sun!!! Did you know that I´m your neighbor?

Space is a really big place Space is a really big place. But it doesn´t seem quite so big when you realize that the universe is made up of Galaxies, which are like cities on Earth.

And just like your neighborhood in your city on Earth, you live in a neighborhood in space.

It’s called our Solar System!! Would you like to learn more about you neighborhood, and meet your Solar System neighbors?

PLANETS Just what are planets, anyway? A planet is a body in space that orbits around a star (like our sun) and is big enough that it forms into the shape of a sphere because of its own gravity.

There are 8 planets in our solar system There are 8 planets in our solar system. In order from the Sun they are Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and neptune.

Mercury Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun. A day on Mercury es twice as long as its year.

Venus Venus is the brightest planet in our solar system. It is named after the Roman goddess of love and beauty.

Earth The Earth is estimated to be 4.5 billion years old. Theree quarters (3/4) of the Earth’s surface is covered by water.

Mars Mars has the largest volcano in our Solar System, Olimpic Mons. It is named after the Roman god of war because of its red color.

Jupiter Jupiter is the largest planet in our Solar Sistem. It is so big you can fit all of the other planets inside of it. Ancient astronomers named jupiter after the king of the Ruman gods.

Saturn Saturn has seven thin flat rings around it the rings made up of billions of pieces of rocks and dust. It the lightest planet in our Solar Sistem- so light that it would float in water.

Uranus Uranus orbits the sun lying on its side because it axis is at a 97 degree angle. Talk about faid back! Uranus in the coldest planet in our Solar Sistem.

Neptune One Neptune year equals 165 Earth years. Neptune is the stomiest planet in our Solar Sistem. The winds there can blow up to 1,240 miles per hour.
