Art Movements of the 20th Century Impressionism Expressionism Abstract Expressionism Mrs. Fox - 2016

Art Movement Tendency or style in art with a specific common philosophy or goal, and a group of artists working in this tendency or style during a period of time

Design Elements & Principles of Art Elements: (tools) Principles: (rules) Line Emphasis Shape Balance Color Movement Texture Pattern Form Rhythm Value Variety Space Unity

Subject Matter Subject Matter is the representational aspect of a piece of art. When viewing art, ask yourself this question, “What is it?” (…the answer to this is the subject matter)

Content Content answers the question, “what is the piece about? What is the message?”

Subject Matter vs. Content

Abstract Art Representational Art Art with a visual language of subject matter that is taken from Design Elements to create art free from recognizable visual references in the world. Art with a visual language of subject matter that is referenced from recognizable objects – it “looks like something”

Impressionism Representational Style “First Impression” small, thin visible brush strokes with emphasis on light and shadow Aesthetically pleasing colors – optical mix – mood is peaceful and calm Claude Monet, Edgar Degas leaders of the Impressionist Movement

Expressionism Representational Style (recognizable subject matter) Radical Distortion of subject matter for emotional effect Harsh intense style with use of jagged, distorted lines, crude, rapid brushwork, and jarring colors Mood is dark, depressing, violent Edvard Munch & Francis Bacon are leaders of this movement

Abstract Expressionism Abstract Style (unrecognizable subject matter) Emphasis is on the PROCESS – how the work is MADE Emphasis on dynamic, energetic gesture and spontaneous approach Paint is applied explosively – drips splatters, harsh brush strokes, fierce application of media Jackson Pollock is the leader of the Abstract Expressionist Movement
