Better Data – better decisions I

Aims I Improve access to and usage of data from a variety of sources of relevance to development studies, human rights, vulnerable and hidden populations. Many intergovernmental organizations have a tradition of open data access routines and policies to data they have collected, data collected by non-governmental organizations are often not available for further usage. Also relevant data collected by university institutes and research organizations are often not shared with the community and increasingly also the question is raised which contribution big data may have in this area and how to collect, use, share and analyze these data. But, as we see, also missing data is a highly relevant issue in developing countries – need to push reliable data collection by authorities. → so in general data gathering and data use in support  of the new sustainable development goals that are to be accepted in the UN Sustainable Development Summit 25-27 September 2015.

Aims II Topics to be covered range from improving data sharing culture, ethical issues related to open access to development data, and safeguarding vulnerable populations, to practical and ethical considerations of using big data in development research. Cooperation on four dimensions: Supporting research data infrastructures and training of researcher in developing countries Cooperating within the RDA with other IG and WG who address similar issues and outside in the data and research community. Support networing Pushing mulitiplier effects into own research environment – we need to reach out to the research data producers and users, collect use cases. Outreach to NGO and authorities to foster data sharing culture – Better Data – Better Policies ??
