Linear Perspective

What is it? A perspective is the method of depicting three-dimensional space on a two-dimensional surface. So, linear perspective is when artists use lines in order to create depth.

One-point perspective When you look up at the sides of a tall building, you will notice that the sides of the building or the street appear to converge, or come together, in the distance. During the Renaissance, Italian artists discovered that when straight lines are parallel, they seem to move away from the viewer and meet at a point in the distance. This point is called the vanishing point, because it is where the objects seem to disappear. When artists use linear perspective in combination with a single vanishing point, they are using one-point perspective.

Can you spot the horizon lines and vanishing points?

What you will create using your name… FIRST, YOU WILL PRACTICE WITH YOUR INITIAL.

Recall… A perspective is the method of depicting three- dimensional space on a two-dimensional surface. So, linear perspective is when artists use lines in order to create depth. When artists use linear perspective in combination with a single vanishing point (point where objects seem to disappear), they are using one-point perspective.

TWO-POINT PERSPECTIVE One-point perspective uses lines that lead to a single vanishing point (point where objects seem to disappear). To create the appearance of three- dimensionality for objects placed at an angle to the viewer’s line of sight, you must use two- point perspective. Two-point perspective uses parallel lines that seem to lead to two different vanishing points set far apart.
