7th Grade Vocabulary Week of October 3rd Greek Root: chron = time Latin Root: ab = away from

Chronic (adj) Persisting for a long time or constantly recurring. Example: I feel chronic fatigue because I rarely get enough sleep.

Chronological (adj) Starting with the earliest and following the order in which it occurred. Example: List what you did today in chronological order, starting with brushing your teeth in the morning.

Chronicle (n) A record of a related series of events that is stated in a factual and detailed way. Example: This chronicle about the life of Sir Isaac Newton is very interesting to read.

Synchronize (v) Cause to occur or operate at the same time or rate. Example: If we don’t synchronize our watches, I’m afraid one of us will be late.

Abnormal (adj) Unusual or uncommon, typically in a way that is undesirable or worrying. Example: That’s a pretty abnormal mole you’ve got there, Lisa. You might want to have it looked at by a doctor.

Absolve (v) To clear someone free from blame, guilt, or responsibility. Example: Listen, I know you didn’t mean for the house to catch fire… so I absolve you of any responsibility. Just don’t let it happen again.

Abstain (v) To restrain oneself from doing or enjoying something. Example: Even though it looked delicious, Mary abstained from eating the brownie because she is on a diet.

Abstract (adj) Difficult to understand. Theoretical in thinking. Not concrete. Example: This painting is way too abstract for me, I don’t understand what the artist was trying to do with the shapes and colors.
