Cultural Mapping in a nutshell Exploration of local meanings of place through engagement with people and artistic practice, often with other sources of data Usually an integral part of a cultural planning process Broad definition of culture as a way of life (Raymond Williams) Original models Tenure Mapping of indigenuous peoples (Unesco) and ”counter- mapping” by communities (Parish Maps, UK) Aims to map out cross-sectorally cultural resources recognised by communities: local traditions, narratives, place meanings, land uses, dialects, food e.g. Includes also institutionally defined culture: museums, art collections, public art, historic monuments, cultural activities, artists and other creative professions Facilitated process, wide range of materials and methods: Statistics, traditional media, Internet, interviews, workshops, interactive GIS, participating observation Produces maps, cultural inventories, cultural analyses and recommendations

Training Day structure and aims Aim to give a rough idea about cultural mapping process Opening presentations: baseline information Dividing into thematic groups, information gathering starts Panel and Q&A for all: key actors, current situation, plans for future Field visit: presentations of both areas for all => guided tour, observation and documentation in thematic groups Tomorrow: SWOT based on today’s information by each thematic group Concluding session: Interpretations of SWOT results, suggested strategies and recommended actions by each thematic group

Target area Target area: Housing Fair 2018 area and Hevosluoto island Sitting next to Kokemäenjoki river delta, largest in Nordic Countries Delta partly a conservation area in city plan & part of Pori National Urban Park protected by general plan, partly Natura 2000 area Long-term strategic interest by the City of Pori: National Urban Park in 2001, residential development of Karjaranta industrial site in 2000s Housing Fair 2018 visions: model smaller- to medium-scale housing area off-centre and close to nature, connected to National Urban Park Main growth direction, further development plans along the riverside
