Unit 4 Bonding Nomenclature: How to Name Compounds the “Chemistry Way”
Day 13– Naming Acids & Bases Sci 10 Chemistry. What is an Acid?  Acid: a compound that makes hydrogen ions H + (aq) when dissolved in water i.e.: HCl.
CHEMICAL FORMULA WRITING & NAMING OF COMPOUNDS.
B.9 subsection A, paragraph ii In which you will learn about: Acids Naming acids Writing formulas for acids.
A quick primer. * Late next year, we will explore the full properties of acids, but for now: * Acids are ionic compounds that release H + ions into solution.
Hydrated Compounds and Naming Acids. Hydrated compounds A hydrated compound is an ionic compound that contains water within its crystal structure This.
Acids and Bases  Acids Contains H + Tastes sour Reacts with bases to produce salt and water.  Bases Contains OH - Tastes bitter Feels slippery Reacts.
CHEMISTRY PART 9 Acids and Bases. Acids  A compound that makes hydrogen ions when dissolved in water.  H + (aq)  Look for the (aq) (which means aqueous)
Naming Acids and Bases. Naming Acids Acid- contains one or more hydrogen atoms and produces hydrogen ions (H + ) when dissolved in water. General formula.
A. Element vs. Compound Element Cannot be chemically broken down into two different substances. - Atoms of all the same type Compound Combination of elements.
 Acid  A compound that produces hydrogen ions (H + ) when dissolved in water  An ionic compound Cation = H + Anion = monatomic or polyatomic ions Only.

Acid Nomenclature Acids Examples: Compounds that form H+ in water. Formulas usually begin with ‘H’. In order to be an acid instead of a gas or solid, acids must be aqueous (aq), dissolved in water Examples: HCl (aq) – hydrochloric acid HNO3 – nitric acid H2SO4 – sulfuric acid

Compound Name Acid Name Acid Nomenclature Compound Name Acid Name hydrogen (stem) ide hydro-(stem)-ic acid HCl (aq) = hydrogen chloride hydrochloric acid HBr (ag) = hydrogen bromide hydrobromic acid
