Wanted Searching for a classroom of students willing to take a walk along the underground railroad in order to uncover the history of the united states of America during the time of slavery. Reward for finding these students: the learning experience of lifetime.

Recognizing similarities and differences similarities help create connections with the people around you differences make you unique Everyone should observe the similarities and differences between the people around them This lesson will teach students to respect each other and give them confidence in themselves During this slide make sure to mention specific examples and briefly explain the game/activity that goes with this lesson (circle game)

Understanding the consequences of bullying This is one of the most important aspects of the lessons that go with the underground railroad theme What is bullying? How does it relate to the fifth grade class? some of the information you will learn through this unit does not apply to today’s society This will prepare students to handle the topic of racism with maturity Make sure to say that this is an important base for students to begin at and that the topic of slavery and the Underground Railroad cannot be discussed until the students can grasp this lesson. Include briefly explaining plan for the students to create an anti-bullying video of their own.

Relating bullying to discrimination and Racism Bullying is similar to discrimination and racism students will learn that treating people in different ways based off the color of their skin is wrong They will understand that at no time during future lessons, or in the rest of their life, is it acceptable to repeat any hurtful words or phrases learned throughout this unit This is another serious part of the overall lesson. Make sure the audience knows how serious this is and how much it means to you as a teacher and as a person for your students to understand and to not participate in racist actions and thoughts

Defining slavery and how it came from racism Racism is the wood that fuels the fire of slavery The students will learn where slavery started, why it started, and the entire process of selling and purchasing slaves I will then explain what the duties of a slave were Don’t forget to mention that this will be split into parts because the students may not have been exposed to any of this before so it will be new to them

Understanding why slaves wanted to be free Define what it means to truly be free I will Refer to literature written from the perspective of slaves The students will be able to empathize will the slaves that they learn about Encourage the audience to think about freedom and what it means to them.

Discovering how the slaves escaped slavery Secret messages spread through music Short anatomy lesson to explain the importance of the north star Secret messages hidden in quilts All leading up to the underground railroad Mention that examples of the music and secret messages in quilts will be included in this lesson and that I plan to work with the music teacher to make sure that the music aspect is the most successful that it can be since he is the most qualified to teach about it

Understanding the underground railroad Explain the dangers that come from using the underground railroad The students will learn the signs that signaled if a house was a safe place to stay The students will then learn the consequences of a slave getting caught The students will also learn the benefits a slave has of making it to Canada You mean it’s not really underground? Explain that some of the content in this section will be omitted depending on the class’s ability to handle and understand it

Thank you for listening!
