What is skeletal structure? The skeletal structure is one whose members can be represented by lines possessing certain rigidity properties. These one dimensional members are also called bar members because their cross sectional dimensions are small in comparison to their lengths. The skeletal structures may be determinate or indeterminate.

Types of skeletal structure Different verities of structural forms are in use . The structural forms can be grouped as a under: Types of skeletal structure Continuum structures Framed structure

Framed structure There are those which are formed by joining discrete structural element at their ends forming joint. The joint of a framed structure are points of intersection of the member , as well as points of support and free ends of member.

Continuous beam A Continuous beam is consists of a straight member having one or more points of support. All external couple acting on the beam have their moment vector normal to the plane containing axis of symmetry and the beam deflects in the same plane.

Framed structure Framed structure Continuous beam Plan truss Space truss Plane frame Grid Space frames

Plane truss Plane truss is a idealized as a system member lying in a plane and interconnected at a hinged joints. All applied forces are assumed to act in the plane of the structure , and all external couple have their moment vectors normal to the plane , just as in the case of a beam.

Space truss A space truss is similar to the plane truss except that the member may have any direction in the space. The forcess acting on a space truss may be in arbitrary direction, but any couple action on the members must have its moment perpendicular to the axis of the member.

Plane framed A plane framed is a composed of members lying in a one plane and having axis of symmetry in that plane. The joint members are rigid connection. The forced action on the framed are in the plane of the structure.

Where as in the former case the connections are assumed to be. Grid A grid is a plane structure composed of continuous member that either intersect or cross one another. In the latter case the connected between member are often consider to be hinged. Where as in the former case the connections are assumed to be.

Space frame The spaced framed is the most general type of framed structure, in which there are no restrictions on the locations of joints, directions of member, or directions of loads.

Continuum structure include structure formed from surface element. flat slab, curved shell element and solids like dames and retain walls. Such structure do not have distinct joint.

Deformation in framed structure When a structure is acted upon by loads, the member of the structure will undergo deformations ( or small change shape).the calculation is these displacements is an essential part of structural analysis. The main reasons of deformations is a the some force and moment. Like axial force, shear force, moments, twisting moment.
